Seriously, give the GA a bottle of water and they will give you an upgrade? But definitely agree that even a little kindness can go a long way. Uh, just not that far.

It would be considered bribery anyway and grounds for termination about giving out upgrades. Yes kindness is a great thing and can get you better service. To start giving out free services, that's a different issue.
Why not just be friendly and polite to everyone, but especially front-line staff? There are already enough irrascible people in the world, so try and tip the balance whenever the opportunity presents itself.
No, you probably won't get an upgrade, but not being jerk is its own reward.

There was a time back in the mid to late 90s when a couple of Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies could score an upgrade. Worked for me many, many times on AA and US during the years I had status with them (pre-DL for me).
The automation of upgrades has ended all that...probably on all carriers.

Whenever I talk to a GA, I always ask if I can grab them coffee or water or the like. 99.9% of the time they say no, but the 0.1% who take me up on the offer are very appreciative. While it certainly doesn't give me an upgrade, it makes me happy that I was able to make someone's day just a tiny bit better.
Be extra kind over the holidays-the kettles are out in full force and the GAs take the brunt of their anger. An extra smile or thank you to a front-line agent can go a long way.

I think that is more the spirit and i totally agree. You just be nice for the sake of it then expecting the front line folks to get you something for free in terms of upgrades etc. It's just a good feeling when you have a positive interaction vs i'm doing something to get something in return.

A bottle of water today? Ludicrous.
Cookies for a FC seat during the 1990s on AA and US? This would have been unbelievable on PMNW.

Most GA will take sealed food. And open containers from frequent flyers they know. If water bottle will get you an upgrade, why do I even bother to keep my status?
