Compass not allowing valet checked bags on E175 in DTW?
Flew out of DTW this morning on a e175. When I boarded with my legal roller board, the oh space in F was full (only place it would fit) so I left it at the base of the jet bridge by the pink sign for valet checked bags. My bag had a valet check tag on it.
FA comes on and tells me no can do on this place. Now I'm waiting down at baggage claim for my small roller board.
I practically live on these larger RJs and have never seen this before. What gives?

Been that way forever. If it doesn't fit it gets checked (just like mainline). This is only on the E175/170. CRJ700/900 pink tag.
Your roller should fit sideways in the Y bins, right?
I don't know. I'm on CR7s and CR9s more often and it's always valet tagged. I don't think I've sat in Y on a E175.
In the future if the F bins are full, take it back to Y. It is faster than waiting at baggage claim. The F and Y bins are the same depth so it should fit.
I find that hard to believe. Or is this one of those "look at me" Conpass doesn't operate ground ops so you're really talking about Regional Elite?
The poster is correct, Compass (E175/170) has always been treated as mainline with respect to cary-on baggage. If it does not fit or there is no more room it is checked to final destination baggage claim.
On all the Compass flights I have been on the FA's, during their boarding announcements, say something like "If you cary-on bags won't fit please let one of us know and we will check it to your final destination baggage claim." Just like mainline.
Just as a fun fact - Compass aircraft are the only "connection" aircraft in which the ground crew opens the door, not the FA. On all other "connection" carriers the FA opens the door.
I've flown 100+ segments on RJs in the last two years. Granted, mostly on ExpressJet operated flights but I've never experienced this before.
As stated above, only the CRJ family and the E135/145 have the valet checked bag tags since they don't fit most normal rollerboards. The E170/175 aircraft have always been gate checked. Most times, gate agents announce that sort of thing during their "Welcome to xxx operated by compass" spiel.
