Very sorry to hear about your father.
Under normal circumstances, if you want to change an award, award inventory would need to be available on the new dates (and might be at a higher redemption level than you originally paid), and you would have to pay a change fee unless you are PM or higher.
However if you call and explain your situation you may be able to get them to force open inventory and/or waive fees. No guarantees. Good luck.
Bereavement situations happen quite frequently and DL will help out a good bit, had a similar situation in my family earlier this year and Delta let us buy tickets 2 days out on regular LUT pricing.

Would it make sense to buy redeemable miles from DL? Or will DL let you change to a ticket paid with money and use miles to upgrade into BE? (This will be expensive.) Since it's near the holidays, is there a reasonable S or I fare available?

You don't say what status you have. Only time I've been able to get inventory forced is from Chisholm agents. Particularly if you have the status, might try calling again.
Very sorry to hear about your father. I was recently in the same position as you and found Delta to be extremely accomodating and was able to make several exceptions on various issues.
Please give them a call again and see if you can escalate to a supervisor/manager. Good luck!
