Because Dragons are fierce and territorial...protecting their layers and the treasure within...
Once upon a time lounges were really nice and had ample seating, drinks, and food, which made a great treasure....thus the people who kept you from entering their domain and partaking the treasure were aptly named "dragons"
Seems they are typically called agents when FTers get what they want, but called dragons when FTers don't get what they want. Some here use the rude term all the time, not necessarily intending offense. OTOH, don't think many here would appreciate being called a dragon either.
One of their biggest roles is keeping people who don't belong out. Thus, they're 'guarding' the lounge... a common literary role for dragons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._in_literature). Whether it's rude or not is another question.
I don't tend to see it as disparaging, and don't tend to see it used that way by posters. YMMV.

It might not be DL specific - but in my experience the demeanor of the agents sure fits more closely - as I recall, the discussions about the Admirals Club referred to their agents as AAngels. I don't yet recall feeling that way about any Sky Club agent.

Doesn't AA call some of their AAgents AAngels, especially the ones who handle AA elites? Sort of like they call their FF program AAdvantage? But then shouldn't the aairline be named AAmerican?

I've noticed that FT has a lot of "common terms" that could be construed as derogatory depending on your viewpoint. One such example is the use of "kettles" to refer to non-elites, especially those in Y.
As far as "dragons", I've usually interpreted it to be negative in most threads, but that's probably because a good chunk of the threads around here are complaint oriented.

Kettles is a banned term in some other forums here.
