FA Gum Chewing

Maybe it's because I'm from Singapore or I'm a ......... DYKWIA as a newly-minted GM, but I find FAs who chew gum during boarding, safety briefing, or even inflight service unprofessional. Has happened on a couple of DL flights recently.

US Airways, I can understand - but DL? Come on. I grew up with SQ, they would never be caught dead with this.

FA Gum Chewing

There are GM DYKWIAs?

Chewing with mouth open or blowing bubbles would be inappropriate. If they're chewing unobtrusively it's not a problem.

WSQBSQ. How can you even be a DYKWIA if you're not even a DM... Wow. IBTL.

Agreed, this is the worst. Should definitely be part of the service standards. Trying to decipher a PA announcement through slurred speech and repetitive smacking is somewhat difficult.

Along the same lines there is nothing worse than being seated next to a gum chewing passenger... They always seem oblivious to how they annoy those around them, as if they are the only one who can do it quietly and unobtrusively in the world. If this is you, on behalf of your fellow travelers, please stop...

I'm surprised that FAs, GAs, etc. are allowed to chew gum in uniform or on duty. It looks very sloppy and unprofessional, the opposite of the first impression that the employee and employer want to give. OTOH, would chewing help with ears that are sensitive to pressure changes in flight?

Chewing gum during the pre-flight announcements should absolutely be a no-no. A very basic rule of public speaking. I think discreet gum chewing after that is fine - although would be ideal to get rid of the gum while doing the beverage/food service run through the cabin (since again FA knows they'll be doing speaking for the next ~20 mins).

Otherwise I'm not opposed to gum chewing. Sometimes it's pretty necessary to equalize ear pressure (for those that haven't figured out how to do so w/out anything).

I would think that crews would avoid gum during take off and landing due to the (tiny) risk of swallowing it and choking in an emergency.

The soundtrack is hideous, but even the look of it makes me embarrassed to be American. Just like cows chewing the cud.

My guess would be nicoret gum for both the FA and PAX.

Better than a nic fit.

Let them chew, let them chew, let them chew!

Better than smoking cigarettes, before boarding!

and smelling of cigarette smoke!

Normally I would be totally against gum chewing as being unpolished and unprofessional...

HOWEVER if gum chewing is being done to help with ear/sinus pressures in flight...then that should be allowed..but only when they are not making announcements, etc....

(Which means GA should never EVER be chewing gum....)

I don't have any issue with subtle gum chewing but why are DL FA not wearing sarong kebaya? (SIN FA dress)

I don't thing Asian-style long tight dresses would look very good on many American male FAs.....and they might not want to wear such a uniform on public transportation to/from airports in various cities. Would DL grooming standards require the FAs to wax or shave chest hair that can be seen in the low neckline o the kebaya? This would be a strange rule given that DL allows FAs to have facial hair (for men) and dreadlocks.

In fact, the same female DL FAs who are unable to order the famous red dress in their size might not look attractive in the "SQ girl" clothing. Plus it must be hard to work effectively in the long tight skirts and jeweled sandals, especially in winter.

Another case of my poor attempt at humouring someone applying/judging by local standard/customs to others.

When I was young my game was how many pieces of chewing gum (a banned substance) I can smuggle into Singapore.

Or choking on it when trying to speak with someone, especially during food service.
