Winter storm and MSP

NWS has issued a winter storm warning for the MSP area for all day Sunday and blowing snow Sunday night. On Monday I am scheduled to fly through MSP on a plane that leaves MSP Sunday night (an RJ900) to park overnight at PSC. What are the odds my Monday flight will be cancelled or delayed?

The weather channel is currently predicting morning snow here for Sunday; I don't know what the latest forecast is according to local TV stations, but this morning and last night they were talking about only an inch or so for the metro area.

MSP is well prepared for winter weather (de-icing stations, snowplows for the runways), so my current guess is that the CRJ-900 should be able to leave here Sunday evening without a lot of difficulty.

If it arrives very late, crew rest regulations may force a delay on your flight in the morning.

If the weather takes a turn for the worst and they decide to thin the flights out into/out of MSP that night, they usually just ferry an aircraft to the outlying station in order to make up that flight, especially being Monday morning. And I've been through MSP where it was just dumping snow like crazy and we still left on time and only a short queue in the de-ice line.

I can't see any problems flying from here due to the amount of snow they are predicting, MSP is as well prepared for snow as any airport I have flown in or out of.
Last I heard was 4-6 inches and not in a short amount of time.

MSP mostly had outbound delays due to deicing, and that impacts DL mainline more than SkyWest (and perhaps other regionals). I was visiting my friend today in St. George who's a SkyWest dispatcher, he was telling me that was the only real issue they were having today. The rain in ZNY didn't really affect his operations but it looked nasty out there too.

Winter storm and MSP

MSP won't even notice the amount of snow we're getting this weekend. Your odds of a weather delay are slim.

Minnieapolians overstate their ability to deal with snow. Forecast shows now 3- 6 inches, and just to the North of Minnie 6-12 inches. If MSP gets 6" and upwards there will be cancellations and delays.

The snow is actually supposed to start later on Saturday and last into Sunday. I am flying into MSP tonight but I doubt it will have much of an effect. MSP handles snow really well. A couple of years ago after 2-3 feet of snow, the airport was open almost 100% as normal the next day. Can't say that about the NYC area airports after the Christmas storm a year later.

Though there will certainly be some delays and perhaps some cancellations with over 6", it will be on a much lesser scale than almost any other airport in the USA having to deal with the same amount. I disagree with your first sentence, and not just because you created a word that doesn't exist!!

The latest forecast this morning calls for 6.1 inches of additional snow (we has about an inch yesterday afternoon and evening) starting late tonight (maybe 10 pm) and finishing by about 10 am Sunday. Smaller amounts are expected toward the south (where MSP airport is located). In fact, the airport is right on the border of an area with just a winter weather advisory. Less snow is expected there, a maximum of 2-4", so that guesses for the airport would be on the low side of 3-5".

ADDED: Strong wind will follow the snow. SD has a blizzard warning.

Somewhere between slim and none, because even if it comes in late, it's likely that a different crew will take it out in the morning and the crew that brought it in will start later the next day etc.

Big problem with the weather in MSP will be the local roads, but only because it's the first snow of the season and there's no residual salt on the roads.

Scheduled to make a mini-SR tomorrow ATL-MCI-MSP-IND, departing MCI (Pinnacle - inbound from MSP) at 3PM and MSP (Mainline) at 5PM. Based upon the forecast and MSP well-documented ability to handle snow, thoughts on whether DL allow me to proactively re-route today (at no charge) prior to any waiver that might be issued, while keeping the max segments?

It didn't see any salt trucks, but the condition of streets and roads last night suggested that they had been pretreated yesterday. I find that for winter travel here, getting to the airport can sometimes be a challenge, especially during rush hour and during the first major snowfall of the season, but once in the terminal, things run smoothly.

Our de-icing setup is also very efficient: departing aircraft loop around a little detour on the tarmac to what looks like a big outdoor car wash, where they're sprayed from both sides simultaneously, before lining up for takeoff. Very quick and easy, although the captain usually announces what's happening for passengers who haven't previously experienced it. The system is much much faster than sending the little de-icing trucks to the gate to service the aircraft before departure. It also saves precious gate space and gets planes out so that another one can arrive.

My guess would be no, although there might be more hope if you were DM rather than GM. AFAIK there's no winter weather waiver in sight. Also AFAIK original routing credit applies to MQMs and redeemable miles for an involuntary rerouting, not segments when you voluntarily beg to be rerouted for free.

I flew through MSP last night and it was a mess. They had about an inch of snow on the ground but most flights were running around 2 hour late. Our 710 flight was at the gate more than an hour before the flight but we pushed back at 810 and departed at 920. The flight before to SDF was also 2 hours late. Left from F and all flights around were announcing delays. They said the backup was in De-Icing. They kept us at the gate for an hour before letting us in line and then once in line it was an hour waiting to deice. I was shocked at this because there was barely enough snow to cover the road. Maybe they had a bad day.

Are you referring to this storm?
