I was just reading an article about the potential merger between American and USair....started to wonder...American offers three class service on some routes, as does United. Assuming that the new airline would keep this (which of course it might not, given that US is 2 class), do people think that DL would have to offer this to compete or is lay flat BE good enough?
My quick response is no. AA will only have FC on their new 777-300. Like Delta, they are adding an Econ Comfort type product called Main Cabin Extra. UA does not have FC on their new 787s. I think FC is going to be a very limited offering by USA airlines. Delta is too far down the retrofit road to change.
Probably a good point. I just wonder if we end up with three very similar airlines if there will be any race to offer a better hard product. Perhaps a true premium Y instead of just more leg room and recline? Or will only having three airlines and there different routes mean less competition?
If the AA-US merger is approved then Doug Parker and US management will be calling the shots. Take a look at what US Airways offers in their business class now and that is what you will get with the new merged airline... Delta and United will look outstanding in their premium cabins when compared to AA-US and they won't have to upgrade a thing.

What are you talking about? The new US business class is, by all accounts, top-notch.

I think you are completely wrong, also. I think we've all seen how well the continental management is working for United.

Would the two of you please cite me some examples of why you feel US Airways is comparable to DL and UA? There is a reason US is known as LCC on the NYSE. US has an identity crisis. They don't know if they want to be a full service airline or a low cost carrier. Did you guys miss the whole trial period where US tried to charge their passengers for beverages of any kind? US caters more to the passengers who chase the lowest ticket price. They are not known for customer service. Delta put forth a lot of changes to improve their premium product. Most recently with their decision to have sleeper suites and premium international service between NYC-LAX/SFO/SEA. Also, the US Airways international network is laughable in comparison that of DL or UA.
A good friend of mine recently flew it. He says the hard product is really impressive but the soft product is still USAir. The food is decent from what he says, but the service is dreadful.

I agree. The new Envoy seats are essentially the same as the new CX Business Class and AA is installing a modified version of it on its new 77Ws that begin arriving early next year.
Programs: DL PM; TK *G; HHonors Gold; SPG Gold; Points but dirt with everyone else

Also known as the seat that DL already has on their entire 747-400 fleet and will begin putting into their Airbus fleet next year (although at a slower pace than the 767-300ERs will get the seat currently in use on the 767-400s).
No one should be posting in this forum and bashing the hard product US offers for Envoy, unless they're also mightily displeased with the seats that have gotten rave reviews on DL's 744s. Soft product could be an entirely different matter, of course.

EXACTLY!
Was just about to post this point....whatever issues USAirways has....their Envoy seat in their A330's is the same that Delta has just NOW put into their 747s...
AND HERE IS THE KICKER....
USAirways has had this seat since 2009...see this report from Flight Global:
