Looks like Mrs. Aroundtheworldagain and I are going to spend 3 months next summer somewhere on the planet outside the USA. We will have a 16 month old with us. We have been on some incredibly ridiculous trips and itineraries in the past so we don't need to be next to the best Western hospital in the world if we find an out of the place to go to. Obviously anywhere southern hemisphere would be winter (may/june/july) but could work if the right place. Looking for thoughts on where DL or Skyteam partners fly that might be the most interesting. Only requirement is somewhat high speed internet so that I can keep working a bit. I have more miles than I ever know what to do with so not worried about running out of miles by redeeming award tix. Leaving from NYC. Interests include good food, surfing, snorkeling and soccer. Cheaper or quirky suggestions welcome. Will eventually post winning destination.
Have you been? This had come up. What would you do for three months (other than surf). Is it cheap? And is there internet?? And Samoa or American Samoa? Tahiti has some great waves but mellower beaches for the family? Food - mostly seafood?

Do you really want to stay for three months in one spot? Why not say combine Samoa or Tahiti with Australia?
Another option would be Brazil. Plenty soccer and surf.

Yes. That is part of the challenge, to stay in one place I think. Traveling is "work" and we want to make life a little easier and find a routine (maybe even a new language for a bit). Since I will be working every day for my day job - remotely for a few hours, I think that setting up in one place is the best this year (until I retire and then I can move every day).

Oh and yes to brazil. Any ideas towards the north of the country? Never been and that was on the top of the list.

I might suggest one of the major cities in the northeast - Recife, Fortaleza, or Salvador - but I don't think you can get all the way there using SkyMiles.
BTW, I would echo the suggestion of Australia, personally. While there may be the opportunity to visit other cities for domestic travel, Cairns may be a good base of operations. It's the gateway to the barrier reef and is a major destination for beaches, snorkeling, and water sports. It is also situated nearby to tropical rain forests.
Ian sure you have been, but I would vote Tuscanny. Lots of great small towns to visit. Head into Florence every so often. Tour all the small wineries off the beaten path. Visit some farms. Olive oil tastings. Cooking classes. Take a week to hike cinque terre.
Villa rentals just outside Florence are reasonable too.
We visited for a week in Florence a few years ago and I fell in love. The food and cities in cinque terre were great. Loved sienna and some of the smaller towns between FO fence and sienna. Also we did a day tour with Lucca from Hills and Roads where we really fell in love. He took us to an old farmhouse and ranch where the owners wife prepared a giant meal for us. She spoke no English, but was so welcoming and cheery. They made their own wine which we bought and bottled ourself for 2 euro in her basement (local restaurants also came by to get their table wine). After eating, she showed us her garden and then her husband and the workers all came in from the days work (as we left). Apparently it was one of the few remaining working cattle ranches in the area.
That countryside tour was great, and I'd love to go back.
Sri Lanka! You would have to take a non SkyTeam flight from SIN, BKK, or BOM.
Sri Lanka has it all: spectacular scenery, ancient ruins and sacred places, charming colonial cities, wildlife (monkeys, elephants, monitor lizards, birds, etc.), beaches ranked among the best in the world, warm and friendly people. Kandy is at a higher elevation and cooler than the coastal cities; Galle's center (Galle Fort) is a lovely small arty enclave within an old Portuguese fort and near beaches, but more visited by tourists.
Europeans and Australians are rediscovering Sri Lanka now that the civil war has ended. Despite recommendations by the NY Times, National Geographic, and Lonely Planet as the place to visit in 20XX, Americans do not seem to be rushing here. I am nearing the end of a month-long visit and have not encountered another American tourist the entire time.
Consider a destination with good Spanish-language immersion programs such as Ecuador or Peru! You could take as few as 15 hours per week in lessons and have great "tourist level" Spanish by the end of the Summer.

Is there one place you would "set up shop" in Sri Lanka. We had actually given this some early thought. How do costs compare to India? And of course we would have to buy a ticket from India if no Skyteam.
