I've a six hour layover this Saturday at JFK, and thinking that's too long even for a SC stay.
What's a realistic transit time into Manhattan, for example? Would an hour each way do? That'd leave us a few hours to hang out, maybe get an early dinner.
And as long as I have you on the phone, what's the most efficient way to get to Manhattan from JFK?
If you can't and want to spend time in NYC, take the airtrain to Jamaica station and hop on the LIRR. A longer route would be the E train from Jamaica (and slightly cheaper). About a 45 min ride one way, pending track delays of course

Your time is obviously a little more important than money as is mine. From personal experience, since you asked what is the most efficient, TAXI CAB - IMHO

So that will be faster than the AirTrain/LIRR combo mentioned before? I just looked into that, and it seems it'd be about 40-45 minutes each way.

Saturday not usually to bad in Manhattan but of course there all the xmas shoppers. Taxi cab will be approximately 40-45 minutes so the same time, more expensive but IMHO more convenient.

Just be aware that the cab fare from JFK to Manhattan is a flat $52 plus any tolls and tips. the return might be a bit less but youre still looking at about $130-$140 total for the round trip.

I picked someone up at JFK this past saturday...no rain and it took 1 1/2 hours. The holiday traffic is in full force. Opt for the train..or visit another neighborhood in Queens like Forest Hills or Jackson Heights. Great NYC culture.

Go landside to T4 (via aitrain for T2/3) and visit Oasis.
JFK is also a good place to do a GE interview as their office is open seven days a week for pretty long hours, unlike some other GE offices that keep banking type hours.

There are some great bars and restaurants out in the area without having to trek all the way into manhattan. I'd suggest just pick up a cab to somewhere around the airport, grab a bite, do a little window shopping, hit a pub for an hour or two then head back to the airport.

Take a cab, budget 2 hours on each side for getting there and getting back, and that leaves you 2 hours to hang out. Any time savings you make up on the 2 hours into the city is a gift. Definitely give yourself 2 hours to get back. It's a hairy trip even for the most seasoned. You'll blow $120 round trip on that and whatever entertainment/food you enjoy in that narrow window.

Seconded, was going to suggest something similar... no need to go out to Manhattan just to find a nicer place than JFK for a few hours

The OP hasn't told us his/her interests, but Jackson Heights is certainly an interesting and inexpensive spot to visit and eat - maybe shop for spices on 74th Street! Much more colorful area than Forest Hills.

You're now in the height of the pre-xmas gridlock alert. If you wanted to go hang on on the Upper East Side or something (maybe spend an hour at the Met), you could probably get in easily on the Triboro Bridge. But if you're hoping to see the tree or go to Macy's or do other touristy stuff, definitely take the LIRR and get ready for crowds.
