So, Where exactly are these mileage upgrades?

Sorry if this is a total newbie question, I've been searching everywhere.

According to this page:
http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...de-awards.html

You can upgrade an economy ticket with miles. But where does this actually happen? Do I have to call Delta?

Background: I have Gold status and an upcoming domestic ticket in M class... so it ought to be eligible, no?

Thanks!

You would be eligible on your M fare. Have to be requested by calling Delta. You can check ExpertFlyer (paid service) to see if G space is available on the flight you are currently booked before calling.

Thanks! Nothing like using the telephone :-)

One last question - does anything weird happen with mileage *accrual* on that flight? ie, do I still accrue miles as normal?

Still accrue based on the purchased fare (M = 150% mileage/MQMs).

And, for a domestic flight you'd be eligible on a K or higher fare.

The catch is that you need upgrade inventory in Z or G class available for the flights.

And another catch is that you aren't supposed to be able to use miles to upgrade at the gate; it must clear in advance, but YMMV. Some GAs are able to pull miles if they have time.

This is also something that was promised to us as a website improvement (that is, the ability to request and confirm mileage upgrades online). I believe the timing for that was this year but they've 29 days to get 'er done. Mmm hmmm.

Oh we're going to get the promise... unfortunately it will be in a different form when it goes to revenue based redemption. Sure you can use your skymiles, they'll just be converted to cash so you can 'buy-up' to that P fare.

Could also Tweet delta assist!

Do you not want to take your chances with a comp upgrade and save the 12.500 miles? I'd think GM on an M fare would be pretty high on the UG list unless it's a very medallion heavy route. And if it is a medallion heavy route (say JFK-LAX/SFO/SAN) then I doubt Z/G inventory would ever open up anyway.

Good luck!

An M fare has no bonus over any other fare except against other Golds. I've flown plenty of M fares at gold without getting upgraded.

Good question. This is SFO-MSP redeye.. I reckon upgrade is pretty unlikely and it would be awfully nice to be able to actually sleep!

Wee hours of xmas eve. (ie, evening of the 23rd which is a Sunday). It's a 757 with a fair number of seats, ... think it's a good gamble? I'm trying to figure out how to use ExpertFlyer, kinda clueless at this point.

ExpertFlyer shows G9 for what I believe is your flight. You should be able to call and get the upgrade with miles.

I wonder if they just swapped out equipment. I'm seeing DL 806 on 12/23/12 departing 12:36 am as an A320 with 0 available to upgrade with miles.

So this discussion may be moot for now.
