BOS-LHR now 767-300ER

Hi All, just noticed my flight from BOS to LHR in May is now a 767-300ER down from a 767-400. That is a lot less seats, but looks like it is lie flats on the seat map. Is this a sign this route is in trouble? Is this aircraft as good as the 767-400?

I personally prefer the 767-300 to the -400 for sitting up front (other than the fact that the -400 uses 2L most of the time for boarding). Lavs are significantly larger on the -300, and it seems a bit quieter in flight.

I think that this is more about finding the right fit for this route (I think it might be a 757). I have flown it about two dozen times, and more than half of the time it is empty up front, with moderate loads in Y. I know that DL has tried to keep all their LHR flights with the -400 to have a streamline product, but now that the lie flats are being pushed out across the fleet, it gives them flexibility to find the right a/c. I doubt they would give this slot up, after the MIA failure.

Searched on a random day in July and there was (1) 763ER with the flatbeds going to LHR.

I don't think is necessarily bad right now. They may not have uploaded the summer schedule yet. They certainly could add another flight.

They are running a 763ER with flatbeds to LHR during this off-season.

BOS-LHR now 767-300ER

That eases my mind a bit. I do like the 767-400 but sounds like a good substitute. I mostly fly domestic so when I do go international it is on 767 out of BOS.

If it does go 757 that would be disappointing but not unexpected. AA already runs 3x757 daily to LHR from BOS.

As for more flights, I think there used to be 2 but that was a while ago as far as I recall. It's been 1 time daily for a while.

Old news, the change was effective 15 November. Initially it was only for the winter period, and the 764 was due to return in April or so, now it appears the 76T/76L through EOS. The amenities are the same in BE and Y between 76T/L and 764, the 764s are relatively new from the early 2000s while 763s can be much older. It was nice having an irregular and unique aircraft at BOS for a change but the 763 will do.

Longer term I do wonder with DL adding lie flats to the 752s for JFK-LAX/SEA/SFO routes, if they will ultimately downgrade BOS further at least seasonally. AA flies 757s (which I avoid even as EXP) but they only kept the 764 to be consistent on their lie-flat BE to LHR guarantee.

Nothing wrong with the modified 763ER. One key loss for some is the row 30 exit row on the 764, which are preferred seats any Medallion can access. On the 763ER, rows 20 and 21 (exit rows) are EC seats, so only free to PM/DM.

It looks like MAD is getting the 764 next summer, on both flights. There's your BOS equipment.

Doesnt DL (I know they used to), have a gaurantee of flat seats to LHR? I think that's why the 764 was used on the BOS route.

Now that they have 763's with the new product, they can now right size the market. Once the 757's get the new Flat beds, you may see this route "right sized" again.

Yes, they guarantee lie flat seats to/from LHR, which is why it's not much of a big deal for J pax when they swap in a 763.

The 752 was on the route in 2011 when they were running 2x daily service to/from BOS. It was considered secondary and they did not sell J seats on this a/c given the lie flat guarantee.

I am booked on JFK-LHR on DL 1 on July 6 and just noticed that the aircraft was downgraded from a 764 to a 763L. I am a little sad about this because I prefer the 764 for the overhead bins and more modern cabin. Luckily, DL 2 on the way home is still a 764. Is there any chance that DL 1 will go back to the 764?

The modified 763's are updated cabins with the same type of bins as on the 764. It could go back to a 764, but there's been a 763 intermixed in/out of JFK for a while.

Or for us pitiful Y pax either, right? Don't the lie-flat 763s by definition have the new Y cabins with PTVS and the other bells and whistles?

As I stated up thread, a key loss for a change from the 764 to 763 is the exit row. On the 764, Row 30 (exit row with outstanding leg room) is a preferred seat that FO and GM can access for free. On the 763, Rows 20 and 21 are the two exit rows and are Economy Comfort...free for DM/PM and available at a charge for GM, FO, and regular Y pax.
