Why such a huge price difference

I am looking at a one ticket to bring my fiancee to the USA on a one way ticket. I have been searching for one way tickets to DTW and Delta is showing a Y fare at $2700 but if I search to ORD with a connection in DTW the fare class drops K and drops below $900. So why the $1800 price difference?

Largely comes down to fare rules. Round trips typically include Saturday stays or meet other requirements that provide a lower fare.

But both tickets are one ways. Just going to ORD drops the one way fare by such a large amount.

In a word.....competition.

DTW is a fortress hub. My guess is there are relatively few options from overseas besides Delta.

Bringing ORD into the mix introduces all sorts of competition from both AA and UA not to mention the numerous other INTL airlines that fly there.

Sorry...not thinking clearly tonight.

It may be due to competition on the route or just certain fare buckets already being sold or not released.

Where are they originating?

I recommend doing a search on ITA Matrix Software (http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm) using the calendar search. It'll give you a broader picture of options.

Is this someone you have actually met in person before? Does she have a US visa already? It is very difficult for a single Ukrainian woman to get a visa for the US. Just fair warning, be cautious of a possible scam. Free advice from someone who was burnt before. Embarrassing story to tell, but I hope my experience can help someone else from experiencing the same thing.

Buy a one way and throw out the return.

Yes I've meet her, been through KBP evough and the scary "bus" rides to Poltava.

I understand that DTW is a hub but still makes my head hurt that its so much cheaper to connect in DTW than to terminate their. No need to buy round trip I'll buy the one way K fare going KBP - AMS - DTW - ORD.

Be careful that she doesn't recheck her bag! The bag tag will be checked through all the way to ORD. At DTW it is possible to exit to terminal from customs without rechecking the bag but if it's her first time and if her English is limited she may get confused and her bag will end up in ORD.

Also does she have a visa? She can get a fiancée visa if you'll be getting married within 90 days of her entry.

She also should be careful (is this wise?) answering questions from immigration. Having a ticket to ORD and a fiancé in DTW might raise red flags.

Maybe you could meet her at ORD and spend a few days in Chicago. How long of a drive from ORD is your place near DTW?

I'm not intending in throwing away the ORD portion. Since we are getting married I'm starting her a sky miles account as we will be traveling to visit her home at least 3 times a year. I Live maybe 20 min from TOL or an hour from DTW. So I was planning on spending a few days in Chicago to celebrate her move to the USA. If AA is still around we will probably just take them to TOL.

I plan on traveling with her since she will be traveling on a K1 visa I plan on going with empty suitcases and using my extra allowance to assist in her move to the USA.

Funny coincidence, my ex was from Pyriatin (b/w Kiev and Poltava), but the bus rides were fine .

I think you can also do a one way to PIT for the same amount or slightly less then ORD.
