I'm currently a GM, need about 10k MQM to hit PM. I don't have time for a mileage run, and already an Amex Delta Platinum card holder (just spent over 25k for 10k MQM). So purchasing MQM is my only option to hit PM.
Is $995 a good deal to get PM? Worth it? I'm based in NYC, will PM get me much greater chance to upgrades?

I absolutely would pay the $995 - i just paid about that for a MR to Europe to get over the PM threshold. Been PM for 5-6 years now and this is the first year I have needed a MR BUT my upgrade percentage has been in the 90's every year... that alone makes the MR and the cost worth it for me next year (when i will have a lot of travel)
This year if I did not have the time to do the MR I would buy the MQM's - I wouldn't have needed 10k but I would have bought what I needed.

Lots of threads recently about should I or should't I. From a UG standpoint, it'll probably help with secondary destinations but forget about SFO, LAX, ATL, LAS, SEA and other DM heavy places.
If you plan to book at leasy 75K MQM next year you could give it a try and see if it works, if not, roll you surplus over GM and see what transpires with DL's changes to FF.

.
Hmmm, I fly out of ATL on pretty heavy medallion routes... my UG percentage is in the 90's. So not sure you should "forget" anywhere as it relates to PM.
I am lucky in the sense that i can normally pick and choose what days and times I fly on, so i pick the best looking candidates for upgrade. BUT i'm not the only one in that position.

no... if you don't fly enough or spend enough on the cc... you don't need PM for an extra G. Use that money to buy F when you want... considering its often only a $100-200 more .... and you don't even know if youll get UG anyway...
Are you going to use any of the other benefits of the PM status? Gifting the silver status, the systemwide upgrade vouchers, Skyclub discount?
If so, it may be worth the extra bucks.

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Josh!
There are a lot of NY Diamonds that will be ahead of you on the UG list. Plats who purchase higher fares will also be ahead of you on the list. Even those with the same fare but booked earlier will be ahead of you. If this is only about increasing your UG shot, you may want to think about it some more.
UG's are always a function of airport, when you book, day of the week, time of day, where you fly, biz or leisure, whether you travel alone or with others, and how much flexibility you have for timing your flts.
There are other benefits to Plat but if your primary motivation is UG and you don't have enough flt options, it may be disappointing.

It's easy with overnight turns to do a MR.

Depends on how much the better upgrades are worth it to you, or if you intend to book award tickets you might need to cancel.
Personally I would never spend nearly a grand for Plat over Gold. It didn't really change my upgrades much, the gift is underwhelming, and the bonus miles are the same.
You could always do a DL Reserve card to get your 10K MQM
That said, I was GM for 4 years before hitting PM this year. It's a matter of personal opinion but I really don't feel GM --> PM is that amazing.
Personally, the big advantage is that you'll see your upgrades go up, and for me another was award redeposit which I have used and abused. But the biggest benefit I find about being a medallion is having SDC which comes with GM. Out of 10 of my most recent trips only 2 of them I didn't use SDC. But that's where it comes down to personal pref. What will you use most if you make it to PM?
