I apologize if this question has been asked for 1000 times but I am really desperate about my situation right now so I hope to get some quick answer.
Two friends and I were supposed to take a Delta flight from Chicago to New York but at the check-in counter we were told that there was no such flight and we have to fly tomorrow. The consequence is:
Cancellation fee for my New York Hotel ~ $400
Hotel cost for tonight ~ $200
What is unacceptable was that the agents refused to provide any type of compensation, not even the hotel in Chicago!

You haven't provided enough information . . .
Do you have a printout - eMail or itinerary page from Delta.com showing the correct flight?
Did you call Delta with your 6 digit confirmation number to inquire as to what happened?
All I can think of, is, that you bought your tickets way in advance, and DL had a schedule change, but, they always rebook you on a flight around the same time, but perhaps with a different flight number.

Was your flight cancelled at some point or did it really never exist? How did you purchase the tickets--OLTA, delta.dumb, etc.? Is it correct to assume that these were not award tickets and you have no DL FF status?
Why can you not be put on a flight today or at least try to get on as standby, perhaps with the three of youo being on different flights?

This story doesn't make sense as DL is offering to sell most of the ORD-NYC flights today, starting with U fares on non stops and T (more expensive) on some connections.
Could the OP be at MDW?

Don't know if you are trying to be funny, but it's spelled "Detroit".
3585 arrived on schedule and 1532 is just taxiing right now. I'm not sure why they would say the flights did not exist. You did go to Midway and not O'hare, right?

Both of those flights exist. The first one was early into DTW, and the 2nd one is already awaiting takeoff! There must be a problem with your ticket - not the flights.
Do you have the 6 digit confirmation number so they can look up your reservation?
Also - just takin' a shot in the dark - DL3585 is from Chicago Midway Airport to Detroit. Is it possible that you're at Chicago O'Hare Airport?
edited to add . . . . Before even disgussing compensation, FIRST you, or we, hafto figure out why & what happened as to your reservation and flights - - THEN we can POSSIBLY advise to any comp.
Sometimes I wonder if this should be CompensationTalk.com!

OP - All of the questions may be confusing, but they come down to a series of simple questions, all of which you can answer easily:
1. Which Chicago airport did you go to? Was it O'Hare or Midway?
2. Your flights did depart as scheduled (or better), so the "no such flight" thing makes no sense.
3. As to compensation, we need a lot more facts, but bear in mind that DL's COC make it clear that there are no consequential damages paid. In other words, if you've got a hotel booked, they won't pay for it.
4. Regardless of the problem. If it's too late to cancel the room for the night, it's possible that the property will extend your stay or book you for another night down the road (as opposed to refunding you or giving you an open credit for another night).
$200 for a hotel near a Chicago airport? Wow. You sure dont look very hard. If nothing else use hotwire to find something much cheaper, even for 3-4* hotels.
