As lax-dca ug

Hello all, I am going from LAX-DCA on AS tomorrow and am in Y currently. What from your guys' experiences are chances at an UG on this route? I understand there are past forums on this topic, but I really think a current and lively discussion is warranted here and now, particularly as FF dynamics have shifted in the last months with the year coming to a close.

Upgrade on what basis?

When you say Y, do you mean a FULL unrestricted refundable Y fare or just that you're booked in coach, probably on a discount fare?

It also might matter whether the flight is booked as a codeshare (DL flight number) and whether it's on DL or AS ticket stock.

Ah yes sir, you ask some terrific questions I neglected to specify. Y as in booked in coach on a discount fare. I am also booked as a codeshare with a DL flight number. I am also PM. Now let the debate and speculation run wild!

it's hard to say, actually. I've taken this R/T flight 3X's this year. I've been upgraded all three R/T's. Once as a GM and 2X's as PM but hard to say without knowing load factors. I'd say chances are pretty good for an UG and AS doesn't clear them for medallions until T-24 and not a bit sooner then that. I"ve also gotten the UG as little as 6 hrs before departure (I think that was the GM one). you should be good but hard to tell......

I would expect LAX-DCA normally to be elite heavy and have some paid FC fares, but the holiday weekend should help a lot, assuming that your ticket is eligible for an AS upgrade as a DL elite. It's been a while since I've flown AS and I don't know offhand whether the codeshare (and presumably DL ticket stock) would be an issue for the upgrade.

good point, MSP. all my tix were issued on DL stock and, in my opinion, that actually HELPED the UG. It seems to me that DL premiums get UG'd at faster rates then lower level AS premiums, even. I thought I remembered reading something about that in the AS forum as well.. I agree, though, the holiday weekend should help reduce # of elites on this route.

It took me a while to find, but, there's another very recent thread about this - - started last month:

DCA - LAX operated by Alaska Airlines - upgrades?

I have decided to start trading futures based on my upgrade chances for this flight. Anyone else want in on this?

Only one AS flt myself this year (with DL stock) but I was told by AS that DL Diamonds do not clear until after the lowest of AS elites have cleared. Only then will the DL pecking order kick in. Maybe this is a YMMV.

This has been my understanding too. It also corresponds to how DL handles upgrades for AS elites; they clear after all DL elites and companions.

My understanding as well, but earlier this year I had an AS upgrade clear at about 40 hours before first flight on the itinerary. PDX-SFO on a AS code share on a DL ticket. I was very surprised.

The craziest thing just happened. I checked in for my flight and when I checked my itinerary on the DL website again, my ticket was not in First and I chose a F seat. Does this mean my upgrade went through?

Did you check your itinerary summary after you clicked "Save & Exit", to make sure the seat "stuck"?

Likely due to all the UG of medallions that checked in. Must be low AS and DL medallion volume due to time of year and day
