I am leaving with a group of 12 from MSP to DAR on a ticket booked with KLM flight numbers. I know the first flight is a Delta codeshare, operated by Delta. My KLM reservation clearly states that each passenger can bring 2 bags free of charge. However, my long-standing experience with Delta (and their demonstrated-less-than-great customer service at MSP) makes me doubt this is will be honored upon check-in. I want to avoid the group showing up with 12 bags and Delta attempting to make us pay for 6 of them (despite above stated reservation info). I sent Delta a message about 5 days ago through my reservation page with no response. I'd prefer to have a written response so there is a papertrail if this becomes a problem. What's your take on the luggage thing and how should I best communicate with Delta/KLM on this? Thanks for your help!
Unless one of you has DL status, or ST Elite or Elite + status, then I think you can only take 1 for free. But I would ask twitter, and if they say you can take 2, then print out that tweet.

I think it's going to be determined by the first operating carrier which is DLand their baggage rules.
Thanks for your answers so far. These are all Economy or Economy Comfort seats. Thanks also for ignoring my typo.... There are 12 of us so according to our KLM reservation, we are entitled to 24 free bags (traveling on a mission trip so much of this space will be taken up by supplies we are donating). I will try tweeting. If I were traveling alone, this wouldn't be a big deal. Since it's a group, I want to make sure everything is covered.
I did a similar trip (SDF/DTW/AMS/WAW and return) in June. I was the only DL Elite. I confirmed (verbally) with DL several times and always was told all those flying with me got 2 free bags due to me being Platinum. There were 2 PNRs involved. When we checked in at SDF I had to discuss/argue firmly to get all the bags checked for free. The GA said as she was finishing the process, "you are lucky I'm being nice. The agent on the return won't be this nice". Amazing!
Of course when we left WAW to come home the KLM agent recognized me as Platinum and quickly acknowledged that we ALL got the free bags (however, several of us didn't have 2 bags on the way home......also a missions trip with 7 of us traveling so much of our "baggage" was left at the missions location).
Hope you enjoy your trip and things go smoothly! BTW, I'm presuming you or someone in your group are Gold or higher.
Actually, this is a pretty simple issue. DL's baggage rules govern, and this is an international itin, so you just check DL's policy on flights to Tanzania. I'm not sure if DL considers Tanzania in North Africa or South Africa, but either way, you are only entitled to one free bag each https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...p/checked.html
This is the trouble with codeshares. It doesn't really matter what KLM promised you, DL's rules apply when you check in at MSP. Perhaps DL will be nice and honor KLM's promise, but I can't imagine them letting you check an extra 12 bags.
Of course, if you are GM or STE+, then you are entitled to an extra bag, and I believe this can apply to up to 8 others in your reservation (The benefit applies to up to 8 travel companions on a medallion's reservation for a total of 9 passengers.) https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...-benefits.html
Good luck with your missions trip and I hope it all works out for you!

That would be true for MSP-AMS, assuming that the group is on a TATL nonstop.
How does the "elite and up to eight others on the same PNR" rule work when 12 are traveling? Must they split three off of the PNR before the day of departure to get this benefit?

The DOT only cares about marketing carrier which in this case is KLM. .All carriers must apply the marketing carrier’s rules as they pertain to baggage fees and allotments. Additionally, the same rules applied at the beginning of a customer’s journey must apply throughout the entire journey.

I thought the baggage rules of the airline that operates the first flight (in each direction) apply.
