It's interesting (and to the OP, useful) to know just how it's treated. Does the plane turn around and fly to San Juan, arriving very late? Or is the flight canceled? If the latter, it's clearly irrops; it's neither MX nor WX, so how are pax treated? What benefits are available?
we are about to make the approach to JFK. we can't move after landing and need to let the paramedics on.
I feel bad for the passenger, but she had a seizure before we took off. That should be indication enough that it may not be the best day to fly. The FA should have mentioned something. also returning to JFK is taking longer then an emergency landing in DC or even Baltimore.
so the delay will be over 4 hours.

After EMTs come on board to offload the ill passenger, the plane will be refueled and paperwork completed. Then you'll leave for the destination, possibly with new crew if eligibility limits cause them to "time out."
IME the process takes about two hours, but my most recent medical diversion was complicated by being an international flight from AMS than made the unscheduled landing in a Canadian airport not served by DL. The ill passenger didn't have the correct travel documents (visa for her passport) for entry into Canada, luggage was required to be offloaded, and there were no DL staff to help with this. I was sitting in 1C in the A330 and was able to see and hear almost everything. It was interesting to observe the process and learn what is involved in such situations.

However, NYC is a DL crew base, so landing back at JFK makes it easier for DL to get new crew quickly if the current crew can't continue to your destination. Even though it's farther, this could help get you to San Juan sooner.

There was no question that the passenger would be allowed to enter Canada and would be treated at a very good (university medical school center) hospital there.
It seemed to be airport staff who were tasked with finding the bags to offload, but they experienced difficulty, perhaps because they weren't familiar with DL processes and equipment. I also suspect that the bags would have been in a far bin that was loaded first as I heard people discussing that she had had a very long layover in AMS.

No. Looking at Flightaware you were as far away from DC area as you were from NYC.
And NYC has lots of standby crew to get you on your way to SJU without a crew delay. This crew will timeout for sure.
I think the complaint here is that the flight should have NEVER taken off with an ill pax on board. It's not like she has a slight cold. A seizure is quite serious and FA should have request pax be taken off at least until the next flight when medical safety for flying was ensured.
we are back in the air now with a new crew.
I have no problem returning, but we shouldn't have left in the first place. The woman had a small seizure which delayed the departure by 30 min but we still left. Then she had a bigger seizure in the air and went unconscious.
The paramedics moved fast once on the ground.
I wonder if I'll get the additional miles (sarcasm)
Thats a good job getting it turned around so fast. Looks like less than 70 min on the ground... so probably less than 45 at the gate to have paramedics get the pax, do paperwork, refuel, and get new crew.
yes. delta handled this the best way possible. my house was destroyed in the hurricane so I've been flying delta all over and they have been very good. The last flight I was seated next to a passenger of size and delta was very kind over the issue.
speaking of which.. There are passenger of size policies in place. What about health polices for passengers?
