Which DL Partners Incur Fuel Surcharges (YQ/YR) when Redeeming DL miles for an Award

I think it would be a very useful resource for those of us trying to redeem skypesos to have an up-to-date list of which partners will incur YQ when booking with DL miles. Also, it would be nice to have an idea of what the average YQ is for a typical itinerary. I realize this varies to some degree but even if we can ballpark it (for example $100-200 versus $350-450) I think it would be helpful.

I am by no means a DL expert so I'm hoping that others can provide most of the info and I will keep the post updated. Ultimately if we can get a good list together I would envision this post may be stickied. For the purposes of this list lets assume that the flights originate in the USA. (All partner flights originating in Europe used to incur YQ but according to this post YQ is no longer being applied to flights originating in Europe).

A "yes" indicates that YQ will be charged when booking w/ DL miles.

SkyTeam Partners:

Aeroflot (SU): Yes
Aerolineas Argentinas (AR): No
Aeromexico (AM): No
Air Europa (UX): Yes
Air France (AF): No
Alitalia (AZ): No
China Airlines (CI): Yes
China Eastern (MU): Yes
China Southern (CZ): Yes
Czech Airlines (OK): Yes
Kenya Airways (KQ): Yes (updated 4/23/18)
KLM (KL): No
Korean Air (KE): No (Although DL had been collecting YQ for a while)
Middle East Airlines (ME): Yes
Saudia (SV): No
TAROM (RO): Yes
Vietnam Airlines (VN): Hit or Miss
Xiamen Air (MF):

Non-SkyTeam Partners:
Air Tahiti Nui (TN): Yes
Alaska Airlines (AS): No
GOL (G3): Hit or Miss
Hawaiian Airlines (HA):
Malaysia Airlines (MH): Yes
Olympic Air (OA):
Virgin Atlantic (VS): No
Virgin Australia (VA): No (Although DL had been collecting YQ for a while)

Please chime in with other carriers that you are familiar with and I will update the post as the responses come in (and please let me know if I messed anything up)

AF, KL you may want to clarify that it is YES if origin is Europe or Middle East (as I believe is the case, others can verify), and list the origins out of which it is No.

For OK I am 98% sure it is yes (YQ charged).

VN: Hit or miss. There have been reports of it not being collected.
VA/DJ: Not collected at the moment.
SV: No YQ/YR on revenue fares
AR: No YQ/YR on revenue fares
AZ: No
MH: Yes

I suspect that G3 has no YQ/YR on revenue fares.

9W/IT: Not worth mentioning, since partnership ends next month.

All partners should toggle to Yes for tickets originating in Europe, and AF/KL are yes if originating in the Middle East and involving travel via AF/KL. Note that there have been reports that the ex-Europe YQ (International Origination Surcharge) is not being collected at the moment.

I don't think ballparking these is worth the effort. If DL collects YQ/YR, it comes straight off the relevant revenue fare. Search on ITA Matrix for the route being travelled (breaking it up by segments if necessary) in the proper class of service. Set the currency to USD and the sales city to somewhere in the US (LAX or ATL are my defaults). The YQ/YR reported there is the amount that will be collected. People need to take a little bit of initiative on their own, especially given the way that airlines change their pricing (including these surcharges).

Thanks folks. For the time being I'm just gonna keep this list for flights based out of US. I'll add a disclaimer that all flights originating in Euro will incur YQ.

You should have two columns, one for ex USA and one for ex Europe.

We know ex Asia you generally are not charged.

What about ex SA and Africa?

Again, exUS and exEU are most pertinent here.

Yea I was thinking something like that could be useful. For the time being I just want to get exUSA since that is going to be the most relevant for most people. Once we have that list 100% complete we could look into exEU, exAsia, etc.

The other issue is taht I wanted to insert a table to make it easier to read and format but I couldn't figure out how to do so. Do you know if it is possible?

Now THAT would actually be an "enhancement" (if they meant to do it)

It's really not complicated. DL metal: ex-Europe only. AF/KL/AZ: ex-Europe and Middle East. All other carriers: origin is irrelevant, they either collect it or they don't.

It honestly scares me a bit, as I think they might have meant it, but in order to bring about FBATR. If they've stopped collecting the YR on KE, I'm tempted to try to get my $250 back for LAX-ICN-AKL. However, I had issues with them trying to reprice the miles required when I changed the return and really had to fight, so I think it might not be worth trying to get them to re-check the fees.

Government policy means no fuel surcharges on any itinerary originating in Brazil.
