Get Skymiles by donating to cancer research

The National Foundation for Cancer Research has launched a program in which donors can choose to receive Delta Skymiles when making donations of $25 or more. Donors receive 10 Skymiles for every dollar donated to cancer research.

To make a donation and receive Delta Skymiles, visit www.nfcr.org/delta. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

[About the National Foundation for Cancer Research]

The National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) is a leading cancer research charity dedicated to funding cancer research and public education relating to cancer prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for cancer. NFCR promotes and facilitates collaboration among scientists to accelerate the pace of discovery from bench to bedside.

Since 1973, NFCR has provided over $288 million in support of discovery-oriented cancer research focused on understanding how and why cells become cancerous, and on public education relating to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. NFCR’s scientists are discovering cancer’s molecular mysteries and translating these discoveries into therapies that hold the hope for curing cancer. NFCR is about Research for a Cure—cures for all types of cancer. For more information, please visit www.NFCR.org.

...and the Delta SkyMiles forum moderators — as well as FlyerTalk Community Director SanDiego1K — have been informed beforehand regarding this program.

We welcome lauramcclellan to FlyerTalk and to the Delta SkyMiles forum in particular.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Canarsie.

Pursuit of a cure for cancer is a noble cause. The number of organizations trying to achieve this goal is mind-boggling.

Since the field can become a bit confusing, I tend to research this and other charities via the net. Here's the link to this Foundation's review on Charity Navigator, a renowned site in this niche.

That is indeed valuable information.

Thank you for providing it, cr34102.

Maximum donation allowed

Is there a maximum donation/skymiles on this? I don't see any information in that regard.

It would appear that the website is not quite set up to accept our skymiles numbers yet.

And according to the charitynavigator link, above, there may be more efficient ways to fight these insidious diseases.

The National Foundation for Cancer Research ("NFCR") only received one star from Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...ary&orgid=4179). There are many higher rated cancer charities (See http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...lts&sortby=rtg for the four star rated ones) including Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Where I believe in giving generously, I recommend checking out a charity before giving. The BBB reports that the NFCR meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. The NFCR's web site shows a "Best in America" recognition by the Independent Charities of America ("ICA"). Following that link takes me to the ICA site, but I was unable to find any mention of the NFCR.

My guess is that the NFCR is a reputable charity, but I am passing considering its low CharityNavigator rating and the high salaries paid its top two officers. Only 68% of your money goes to its charitable purposes with the rest going to administrative and fundraising expenses. Other better rated charities often use 80% or more of their income for programs.

Don't be blinded by miles. If you feel the NFCR is a priority in your giving, give and take the bonus of miles. Otherwise, give your dollars where you think they will do the best good.

There are no right answers.

Sky Miles for Cancer

I just donated$100 for 1,000 miles...Look deeper at the NFCR...the group has given over $280 million to research and been around since 1973....they are legit. The Charity Navigators of the world are self-appointed, but dont look at the impact...most of NFCR's fundraising % money goes to postage...only 10% administrative fees. This is a good deal for miles...

I agree. NFCR is legit. Its declining financial results and high fund raising costs got it the one star rating. Still it makes $10 million available for programs.

The miles offer seems expensive. What do you think those miles cost? If 2.5 cents, than 25% of every dollar given goes for miles.

NFCR and Delta

Reply To KY Roamer: It probably is about that much, but as I figure that is money to cancer research that otherwise would have gone to some other Delta deal like flowers or something....I need the miles, so why not make it go for some good.

First as an Information Security, I see a red flag when I do not see a secure HTTPS link. Instead it is the unencrypted HTTP protocol.

I noted that there is a redirect and a link bug: When http://www.nfcr.org/delta goes to

http://www.nfcr.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1133% 3Aunited-airlines&catid=80%3Adonate-now&Itemid=32

though the page says Delta all over it.

I have sent them the message to correct the link redirect to a secure link, for that and for all personal and financial information collection, to conform to PCI requirements. I also asked that the addresses be fixed. The form is written on a Joomla page, but I can't see if they have fixed the maxlength (will allow more than 7 numbers in a SkyMiles number here) or other input parameters for form fields for input character validation.
UPDATE: Got two quick, courteous responses with the promise to fix these, and look over the code some more. I look forward to a successful program for both sides - donor and recipient.

There are 3 airline donation links:
1. The PROPER ENCRYPTED DELTA LINK: DL: https://www.nfcr.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1133%3Adelta-airlines&catid=80%3Adonate-now&Itemid=32
or in URL format, https://www.nfcr.org/index.php?optio...-now&Itemid=32

2. AA: https://www.nfcr.org/index.php?optio...now&Itemid=200

3. UA: https://www.nfcr.org/index.php?optio...-now&Itemid=32

Agreed.

Check out Kiva.org. Flyertalk has a team there. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...-kiva-org.html and http://www.kiva.org/team/flyertalkers. Several hundred Flyertalkers make loans of $25 or more to budding entrepreneurs, mostly minorities and many from third world countries. The fun part is as your loans are repaid, you can re-lend the money over and over again.
