Best part of the story is the retiring of some of the CRJ-50s

I expect the AirTran/Southwest merger will be of great benefit to MEM.

The full presentation is available on the SEC's website.

No more details on the cuts to Memphis other than the sentence on slide 8.

Thumbs down

Don't understand this. MEM has four long runways, good weather, non-congested airspace. I understand O & D traffic is relatively low out of Memphis, but in terms of giving Atlanta relief, does this make any sense?

Ok, you're referring to Delta, referencing ATL and using "make sense" in the same sentence. I think you answered your own question.

Not looking forward to what this will probably do to my schedule. They already dropped from a 320 to a 319 to a CR7....

That's the problem.

It makes perfect sense, IMO. PIT shares similar characteristics, but not enough O&D. STL is similar as well, but not enough O&D. When we had lots of small startups competing with the several major airlines in the 1980s and 1990s, that helped contribute to a plethora of small hubs. Some of them, like DTW and CLT, thrived and grew to become major hubs. Others, like DAY, CMH, IND, RDU, BNA, SJC, RNO, LAS, PIT and STL (and perhaps others) haven't fared so well. Some, like CLE, CVG, MEM have hung on but appear to be shrinking into oblivion.

As the airlines have consolidated, the adjacent hubs make less sense than they did when they were operated by competing airlines. I expect more hubs to be downsized if fuel stays relatively expensive.

I like MEM. As a DL DM I try to use MEM and DTW as often as possible.

I wonder what "more domestic first class seats" on slide 10 means?

It's been well documented here. All 757-200s go to 28F, 767-300s go to 30F, MD-88 and MD-90 go to 16F, and CRJ-700 go to 9F. Some of these are nearly complete, while others have yet to begin.

Unfortunately, it seems Delta is fighting this pretty hard. From what I've heard, they bought up all the empty gates in A so WN would have only the 1 AirTran gate to work out of.

(Sigh)

This really disappoints me. As a MEM based flyer, I've been frustrated by how poor the connections are out of MEM (e.g. it is hard to get a flight out after work and connect to most of the country. Flying out at 5pm requires leaving the office early). I keep hoping things will get better. Now it appears things will instead be getting much worse.

Apparently, this is not as bad as it looks on first blush. Most of the cancelled flights are RJ flights to places that nobody wants to go. Mainline flights will not be hurt too badly.
