Newbie w/question re using SkyMiles for hotel

Hi everyone, My name is Denise and I live near Charleston, SC. The hubster and I are thinking of driving down to Orlando next week for a few days to see his mum who is visiting from London. We've been to Orlando loads of times before but I've been unemployed now for 8 months and this time money's very tight. We have quite a few Delta SkyMiles. Could someone please give me a quick rundown on how to use SkyMiles to book 2) hotel and 2) rental car?

Thanks!

I think you'll get better responses from the kind folks in the DL forum (rather than in the Florida forum), so I'll move this there

Hi Denise. Welcome to Flyertalk. I've asked a Mod to move your post to the Delta forum where the folks who best understand the use of Skymiles live. So if it goes missing, you'll know where to look.

I don't know if you can use Skymiles to pay for hotels and rental cars. If not, your best bet is probably Priceline/Hotwire to get a decent room for as little $$ as possible. For help with that, you'll want to check in with the Online Travel Booking and Bidding Agencies forum here.

Good luck to you and your husband.

Delta offers no way of transferring miles out of the SkyMiles program to any other programs. The only transfers allowed are from one member to another and there is a pricey fee.

Medallions (Delta's term for elite customers) had an option to use miles for merchandise through Medallion Marketplace. There one could redeem miles for various gift cards and, at one time, some hotel redemptions were offered. However the marketplace has been temporarily shut down and is supposed to return this month IIRC. Whether they will open it to all members I can't say.

What BamaVol said is quite helpful. I use Priceline and Hotwire often for hotels and car rentals. The savings can be huge! Orlando is suffering almost as much as Vegas. So there are some really good opaque deals to be had.

Here is a possible alternative? Do you know anyone who might want to join you in Orlando? Perhaps you could offer them a free flight to accompany you and they might be nice enough to pick up some or part of your hotel costs as a thank you. Maybe a friend, family, or co-worker has some hotel points that they don't want and could use them for your Orlando trip. They might be looking for a trip to Europe next year and your Delta miles might be your way of saying thank you for the hotel points.

True, Delta doesn't allow you to sell or barter you miles. But that is primarily meant to restrict members from offering strangers miles for $ on eBay and Craigslist. But I use miles for friends and family often. They insist that they be allowed to pick up the tab on outings, dinners, and accommodations. Did I break the rules? I don't think so and I don't think Delta would either.

You can get hotel rooms in Orlando cheap as dirt if you poke around. Even if you could use your miles for a hotel - I wouldn't. If you're driving down to Orlando - why do you need a rental car? Robyn
