Make sure to check the competition first. Some of the flights I was checking out TATL were still cheaper on CO with a straight up paid J ticket. In case of IROPS you don't risk getting bumped to Y with a 2 mile refund as your only consolation.
Well eff that (in a way). I just blew 50K on Thursday to upgrade (didn't have a PMU on hand so they pulled them). Calling in for a redeposit. Not going to burn my PMU's on the RT, will spend the 1 mile AND then use that for a domestic K+ fare.

Same offer went out on the NW side this morning. I agree, this supports my feeling that they should come up with a way to make HKQ upgradable. They're clearly not getting enough revenue from the int'l front cabin this summer.
I have a reservation currently being held in Z, up from B. When I upgraded, the res agent told me the miles would be deducted at the airport when I check in, so they're still in my account. I'm going to call right now and ask to be sure they will take only 1 mile instead of 25,000. Will edit to let you know how it turns out.
Edit:
The agent I spoke to said that since they will deduct the miles from the account at the airport, all she needed to do was to put in "documentation" that I was using the one-mile upgrade, so that they'll know to take out only 1 mile at the airport. That makes me a little nervous, but I'll let you know how it turns out.

Greatly diminishes the value of PMUs. More importantly, I already have Z flights booked using PMUs to go to and from Shanghai in July. I did not turn in my PMUs yet. Do you think DL will let me switch to using 2 miles for the roundtrip?

As was said, make sure you check the straight J class fares. I spent the weekend examining open-jaw fares between DC and Scandinavia for a Baltics vacation in August. I had Y tickets, but because DL discontinued service to ARN, I had to start over. I debated using miles for J Class, buying an M ticket and upgrading, or just buying the cheapest Y fare.
I quickly discovered that J class fares had dropped so much that there was practically no difference between J and an upgradeable M fare. In the end, I chose the cheap Y fare, and am saving my miles for a longer, more costly trip.
