Has anyone figured out what the purpose of this 1 miles credit is? I ask because at the same time you all were getting your 1 mile to bump your miles expiration date, i was having my 142,000 miles zeroed out (obviously i didn't get the 1 mile! add to save me!). Mine was the case where my miles expiration date was/and has been 12.31.09 and then, unbeknownst to me, delta decided to change it to 5.31.09. logged into my acct last night to look for award flights to see my acct at zero.
i have a Northwest acct too, but haven't merged them yet (not much to merge anymore).
if any members who got the 1 mile and didn't need it (ie: your active enough with delta that it was meaningless) would call delta and ask what it is, id REALLY appreciate it. hoping it is something i could use in my fight to get my 142,000 miles back...
Try linking them. It only takes a few minutes. You MIGHT get your miles
back. I wouldn't be surprised.
worth a shot- thanks. i just linked them based on your suggestion. it would be nice if it works, but i doubt it since i will be getting the 1 mile credit AFTER my miles already expired on 5.31.09. even if it doesn't work, this info could help my case in getting my miles back.
Although I'm not certain why some people get it and some don't, I think it's obviously intended to avoid premature expiration of transferred NW miles.
Most earning transactions (flying, shopping, car rentals, etc.) post as regular transactions and extend the expiration. However, the NW > DL transfers post as "bonus" which does not extend the expiration. So you could transfer 100K Northwest miles to your Delta account and have them expire the next day. That would be Bad.
The 1 mile resets the expiration clock, so that's no longer a problem. I saw above that one posting was backdated to April 29, so you might be in luck. I'd suggest transferring a few miles from NW (Worldperks University is an easy 400 miles) to Delta.
This is a very interesting discussion, with no conclusions. I just applied for a skymiles account since we do all of our traveling in NW and I just checked my balance - I have a total of 1 Skymile - Yeah!! (of course that will expire)

What makes us think it will be any different for NW?
I think they will give a year or two to use these up and then it will be either devalued or reset to a new expiration date.
That's going to be a very interesting & rude awakening around 2011-12. NW stipulates that they reserve the right to remove inactive accounts after three years, but in practice they have never expired miles. My guess is that the DL clock will start ticking when the accounts are consolidated at the end of the year.

If it is not already ticking......

A couple months ago I created a WP acct, took the WorldPerks University and earned the 500 miles. Then a days or two later I linked it to my DL acct, transfered the miles, so I earned 1000. I just checked, I also got the extra 1 for expiration extension.
What's that song, "Miles for nothing and your drinks for free"
Got the 1 miles bonus as well, despite other activity. This is a very nice gesture by DL anyway. Compare that with Aeroplan's (AC) 18-month mileage expiration, and 7-year rolling miles-must-be-used-by window (where even with activity the miles will expire after 7 years). Thanks DL.
I also got the 1-mile extension. The strange thing is both my NWA and DL accounts were opened in April of this year (both are linked), so I had no activity, zero points (just one booking on DL, with the FF# going to CO).
So I assume they do it if the accounts are linked, regardless if you have any miles set to expire, as well.
Also - I just took WorldPerks University - got the points right away.

Does appear that "linked accounts" was the factor - I got the expiration mile despite earning over half a million DL miles since last July, with 47 segments thus far in 2009.

And that's exactly what the updated terms say will cause the expiration extension:
"The linking of a WorldPerks and SkyMiles account will extend the mileage expiration date on which your miles expire in your SkyMiles account. The SkyMiles account expiration date will be updated 4-5 weeks after SkyMiles and WorldPerks accounts are linked." https://www.nwa.com/worldperks/almt/terms
I had one mile post today but it was back dated to April 29th and the description was: "expiration extension". Anyone else had this post? Know what it is?

Yes, lots of people. It is exactly what you say, an expiration extension for RDM.
