With this discount and buying miles doubled (until Apr 20)
one could buy a Europe business ticket for around $1400....
(ok...no DEQM's...)
Indeed a very good way to save money but still fly in business class if there is award availability for the amount of miles purchased when trying to use the purchased miles.

This is a great way for DL to fill seats and reduce mileage dependency on the specific markets that can bare it. And help stimulate award mileage spending. Problem is, if you dont live in any of these gateway cities then you're on your own getting to the point of departure, right?
I booked the following for my mother at the 75,000
TYS/ATL/MAD.... MAD/ATL/TYS. So, it does appear to include at least some flights to the point of departure.

The 10% and 25% discounts apply to ALL international itineraries (non-Canada) on DL or NW metal (also on KL metal if using NW miles). The 20% discount applies only to specific routes.
OK, I don't get it! Why didn't DL throw a huge BE discount just like CO has had for weeks now? You know, basically sell I fares without the 50 day advance and the 7 day stay, just a Saturday night stay.
DL could not care less whether we burn our miles... they would rather we spend $$$ even if at a discount. The concept that DL is trying to "retire" some of those miles out there is just not plausible.

It isn't?
Jeff believes in funny money accounting. DL doesn't recognize revenue on its balance sheet from miles until they are used or they expire.
As for what makes logical sense, I agree--have a business class fare sale.
However, they may also be trying to keep their high business fares intact for those who are still buying revenue business class.

DL is like an elephant trying to walk a tight rope in trying to keep their high business fares intact right now when customers can buy miles for a business class trip from DL at a generally much lower total cost than it costs to buy a business class trip or when customers can choose to do business with the competition that is more amenable to discounting regular paid business class fares.

I ran some potential itineraries last night, and was really surprised at how much availability there was. Out of either JFK or PHL (connecting through JFK or ATL).
Unfortunately, have decided we really don't have enough time to take another vacation with Galapagos in May, and Lyon/Barcelona/Languedoc in Sept-Oct.
By everything I have read, mostly in the WSJ, the premium business/FC international market has all but disappeared! CO has always had a very attractive BF sale during the summer, and now have extended this to the current time period.
And at the very least, if there is BE award availability for a given date on a given flight, the Z upgrades from an M fare should also be available. Somebody check on that, because if it isn't so, then DL has one foolish business model.

I did check for the flights I booked. Expertflyer was showing Z seats on them....
This promotion is now over and the DL award booking engine was more dysfunctional before the close of the promotion than even usual for the awful DL award booking functionality on delta.com.
DL management probably made up some of the cash value in (reduced) miles back through the ridiculous telephone fees that are generally applicable whenever Delta.com award booking functionality is more or less useless. The rip-off 3-tier award chart's pricing kicking in too probably also helped offset the temporary reduced mileage price level.
