I just priced out ATL/LGW and fought through the award calendar (is that frustrating or what!)
Selected May 9th thru 17th in BE
Outbound ATL/CVG/LGW
Return LGW/ATL 150,000 Miles and $94 Taxes and Fees
Same dates
Outbound ATL/CVG/LGW (same flight as 1st itin)
Return LGW/CVG/ATL 112,500 Miles and $155 Taxes and fees!
Does anyone know why there is some $60 extra just for the extra leg, or has it anything to do with the lower mileage cost?
Or is this just something we should all accept and decide we will never understand airline pricings?
As for finding flights at 100,000 (or 75,000 with the discount) - rarer than hens teeth I guess.
Would have checked more routhings/itins - but kept getting the 'Oops' message telling me to start again.
Delta's taxes/fees are one of those things I cannot figure out!
I changed my mother's flight today from the 150,000 miles I booked her at oringially to the same routing for 75,000. Fees on original $130 or so. New fees $37???? (I think DL forgot to charge us some taxes and have warned her!)
Have to be honest in that I have not had any trouble finding the 75,000 mile tickets in early May.
Redid my ticket to 87,500 going ATL/MAD, CDG/ATL. Did have to do one connection on AF (routing home is CDG/DUB/ATL) but for the savings in mileage. (This started at 150,000 and while I was waiting to book dropped to 100,000 and now....)

That's a 4% savings from this time last year for the same kind of travel -- even as paid fares have fallen by substantially more than 4% since this time last year for ATL-BCN.
Raise costs by 20% and then lower them to provide a net 4% savings from this time last year. Awesome.

This is a great way for DL to fill seats and reduce mileage dependency on the specific markets that can bare it. And help stimulate award mileage spending. Problem is, if you dont live in any of these gateway cities then you're on your own getting to the point of departure, right?

No -- at least not for those who have moved DL miles to NW accounts and redeemed that way. Other segments (before and after the promotion-mentioned flight segments) on the same award ticket itinerary are discounted along with the rest of the itinerary.

It's the same on delta.com (even easier, as there is no promo cert to worry about--it autoprices).
ALL international flights FROM or TO the US (Canada doesn't count here) are 25% off in Business and 10% off in Coach, provided:
-two weeks advance booking
-completed by mid-June
-low or mid availability level
-DL or NW flights (or KL on using NW miles--this is a NW advantage).
Separately, there is 20% off on economy tickets for certain specific flights.
