If you do a same day turn MR, and only have 45 minutes between flights, what is the best way to check in for the return flight and get a boarding pass, if possible. I have not had luck getting crown room folks to print a boarding pass for a return flight to the origin airport before my outbound left. Is it possible to check in via cell phone once you have boarded the flight, or does the flight need to leave the gate, or be blocked in at destination. I suppose the best option is to use your cell to check in once you land at the destination.

Any advice, experience, etc. is appreciated.
I've checked in by phone upon landing many times. Another way to do it is to to the GA working your return flight and ask him/her to print you a BP.

Because you cannot checkin for a return of an outbound that is not completed.
Once baording is done and the door is closed, I often will have delta.com up on my pda at the itinerary and refresh until I can checkin. I'm usually able to do it right around when the door closes or right after the plane starts to pushback.

It's not possible to check in for a return flight if you have not flown the outbound flight. I was wondering if they count it as flown as soon as they scan the boarding pass at the gate when you board the plane. If that is the case, you can check in for the return while waiting to leave the gate, but still in your seat. Somehow I don't think that is possible though.

WBurcham,
That's exactly the info I was looking for. So in your experience, once seated, I should be able to check in for the return leg? That would mean that the scan at the boarding door is what triggers the ability to check in for the return leg. Does that sound right?

I had this exact issue on an SLC-LGA MR a couple of years ago. I walked off the plane, straight to the GA working the LGA-SLC flight, and asked her to check me in. After a couple of questions (about why I was doing an MR) I was checked in and had no issues. You cannot check in to a return flight until you complete your outbound flight (per SMS).

Usually the system gets updated when the flight is closed by the GA. Until that point your probably wont be able to check-in for the return leg.

No, it's not once seated. It's once the door has closed and/or once the plane starts to push back.
I normally turn my phone off but sometimes in turnaround MR's where I am worried about getting removed (or not getting the upgrade) I will do this.

The only other comment I would add is; that if there is a potential for wx delay or re-route, I would wait till landing, then check-in via phone.
You don't need a BP if you have the DL luggage tags with your SM barcode# on them. I've scanned that, in lieu of a BP at the gate and the scanner spits out a reciept/BP. It will even include your current seat assignment (just in case you score a gate-lottery u/g)!
Or you could ask the GA to print/reprint your BP.

The problem with waiting that long is that, if you have a tight connection or same-plane turnaround with a major outbound delay (or even a minor one) you run the risk of 1) being removed from the flight for not checking in or 2) not getting your upgrade.

Correct, scanning the Skymiles Card won't check you in it will just board you.
