Diverting to PTY for a flight going SJO-ATL makes no sense.

Me thinks there is something else...

Fuel stop sounds unlikely...but could be true. You are getting about 100 miles farther from ATL by going from SJO to PTY, which sounds dodgy. But, SJO's airport elevation is 3000 feet (not particularly high, but not nothing) and PTY is only 100 or so. If it were particularly hot in SJO that would make it worse. Also, I don't know about takeoff performance requirements in SJO...are there any mountains or anything nearby that you have to be able to out climb?

no mountains - some volcanos in the distance but nothing challenging - its been overcast but with high ceilings - not too hot at all
