I have been able to purchase upgrades at the gate for travel from Atlanta to Hawaii does anyone know if this is possible from Atlanta to London (on an award ticket)?
Standby upgrades are not offered between Asia, Central America, Europe, India, North America, and South America. This is the info that is given on delta.com on the same day travel changes page.
They may however let you use additional miles to secure an upgrade if there is space available.

Except for the fact the OP is on an award ticket. Award tickets are never allowed to upgrade by any method, except Op-Up situations.

Most likely the FA's will be saying "Goodmorning2U" in coach class.
Maybe we will upgrade to 1st on the Gatwick Express!
Save your $$. There are lots of better (and more cost effective) ways to make yourself feel pampered in London.
BTW, search the UK forum for threads on discounts on the GEX (the EasyJet discount is small but is offered pretty consistently) or, if you are ambitious, take one of the Southern trains to Victoria that make 1-2 stops and save yourself some more $$.
