Over the holidays, my brother had a flight from VLD-ATL-DFW, one way. He decided to ride back with me to ATL and make the connection from ATL-DFW. He had already checked-in on line. In the car, he was speaking with a CSR who was trying to re-book his ticket, to no avail. It was Dec 26 and the ATL-DFW flight was oversold. Finally, the CSR told him to deal with it at the airport in ATL. In ATL, he used the boarding pass to clear security and walked onto the plane with no problems.
Shouldn't the ATL-DFW leg have been cancelled after missing the VLD-ATL flight?

from everyone's previous experiences, the answer is absolutely yes. however, given the flight distance from valdosta is only approx 220 miles and thus such a short flight for the first leg, the system may not have had sufficient time to cancel the whole itin out. I'd say he got lucky.
It's possible the agent he worked with on the phone actually did "fix it" They were going to do this for my mother on 12/23 because we couldn't get her from TYS to ATL. If she drove they were keeping the rest of her ticket "valid" so the agent can do something.

I am acutely aware of the mess that was ATL on the 26th - it was mentioned in the trip report in my signature. The first leg not closed / ticket not canceled (yet) is very plausible, as people at DCA were being told to just not fly to ATL if they planned to get to (list of destinations); it just wasn't going to happen. In any case, I would say your brother was just lucky if he didn't feel the issue was resolved over the phone.
An aside - do DL agents have any discretion with Arrival Unknown (ARNK) codes?
