Originally looked at :
AMS-BOS-AMS, and AMS-LAX-BOS-AMS and AMS-LAX-DTW-BOS-AMS for our dates; turned out, AMS-BOS-AMS was pricey that week, so adding an LAX trip would only be 100€+. Since it's her break, I wanted to do "something" with her, and she's never been to Hollywood. She was quite interested in a quick trip to Universal Hollywood; and I figured it would be fun, and give us some good "American style" daddy-daughter bonding time; and then a few days back in New Hampshire.
Called to book, and was told I could confirm upgrades on all international segments if I "up-fare'ed" to a refundable M. (this would be AMS-LAX and BOS-AMS); so I bite, booked it, confirmed all the seats and thought I was set. Turns out, agent "royally" messed up everything with regard to the reservation. (the upgrades subsequently disappeared)
Was "saved," by a very nice CVG supervisor. Service recovery included : 60K SkyMiles, call to revenue management, release of BusinessElite upgrade ("O" inventory) on the preferred flight (late flight) BOS-AMS; only charged 15K miles per person for this upgrade. And, wait listed, for the upgrade (miles) AMS-LAX; which should be a decent shot as long as the Air France strikes ends. Decided on LAX-DTW-BOS for the return to Boston, since it gives us the entire day (late LAX-DTW departure); and using regional upgrades to confirm the LAX-DTW red-eye (not risking the Platinum+Gold Medallion upgrade on that, and Regional Upgrade space was available).
So, I guess, a long-winded answer, GRALISTAIR, but I know FlyerTalkers appreciate such things. And, a AMS-LAX nonstop is only a "few" hours longer than AMS-BOS; so, what the heck.

No need to apologize - I totally understand. Besides, I am a scientist and love detail.
