3 days in a row, DL158 ICN-DTW delayed to 8pm

Just got DL message that my 8/22 DL158 ICN-DTW flight departure time is delayed from 10:15am to 8pm. DM line agent says it's mechanical issue.

I then checked 8/20, 8/21 DL158 and found that all three flights are delayed to the same 8pm.

Considering the DL159 plane comes in at ~6pm the night before, DL should have enough time to fix the "mechanical issue" for the 10:15am departure. Also, I find it quite a coincidence that DL has a mechanical issue 3 days in a row and delays the flight to the same 8pm accordingly everyday.

N670US has been in ICN since Thursday. Without knowing the severity of the mechanical issue, there's no reason to assume it could simply be fixed overnight. Clearly it could not or it wouldn't still be in ICN. With only 7 744's left in the fleet, they don't really have any slack and they are now scheduling the inbound DTW-ICN to immediately turn and do ICN-DTW rather than letting it sit overnight. They have also cancelled today's DTW-PVG flight.

This explanation makes sense. Thanks. Unfortunately, 8pm departure out of ICN will get me into DTW right after the last DTW-RDU flight leaves at ~8pm, so I will have to overnight at DTW.

I have been trying to find a different routing. ICN-ATL-RDU would be nice, but it's been sold out. The only alternative is ICN-NRT-ATL-RDU, which I don't want to do.

Since it's a mechanical issue, have you inquired about another airline? You could do ICN-JFK on KE. Should be easier to get since KE is a SkyTeam member.

I looked at that option too. But the KE ICN-JFK flight leaves around the same time the delayed DL flight leaves, and gets me into JFK after the last JFK-RDU flight leaves. So I would overnight at JFK too.

I am sticking with DL in this IRROP situation and hope they will take care of me well enough.

BTW, I am on a paid J fare.

They also have a A330 out of service after being hit by a catering truck in SEA. They were subbing a 747 to AMS to replace that aircraft. A second A330 wascalso hit on the ground but may be back in service.

United is also an option to interline to if you cannot get on KE. You could then connect onto Delta in SFO, or remain on UA for the overnight SFO - RDU flight (You would have a full 12 hours in SFO).

Also if you have status with both DL and UA, you can double dip on MQM and RDM :-)

I had a long delay a while ago on the ICN-DTW flight. At the time, the aircraft was rotating through PEK and subject to the notorious Chinese closure of airspace for military use. This caused cascading delays for the better part of a week before the aircraft and crews caught up after the initial ATC problem.

A number of people have indicated that you are no longer able to double-dip as the tickets in these cases are now generally coded as non-mileage earning. You will still be able to claim ORC on DL, but you shouldn't expect to necessarily get any miles from UA.

Ugh, hate to think I will have these issues next month with DTW-PVG-DTW.

Me wonders if these 747s are safe considering it seems like just about every week there is a mechanical issue. It makes you wonder how long Delta has deferred maintenance.

They're safe, but they're approaching end of life. Thus DL is replacing parts as needed, instead of doing a major overhaul.
