Brought to us by the same fine organization that puts $4 Smarte Carte rentals in U.S. airports?

A lot of people leaving the country try to use all the US cash they can on their way out, instead of converting it at an unfavorable exchange rate.

All of this aside, processing cash is a hassle and it's a lot easier to send cash-payers off to get a card. No cash drawer to balance at the end of a shift, agents can swap out positions, no armored car company needed, and so on.

And this lets them pass those cash-handling costs to their customers, most likely the poorest ones.

Which is more or less the going rate if you went into the local CVS or Walgreens and bought a gift card with cash, accomplishing much the same thing.

I guess the question is at the DL kiosks do you get a generic cash card (eg with a Visa logo), or do you get Delta Dollars?

I don't know about other airports, but at MSP these cash-to-card kiosks are NOT Delta kiosks. They are not operated by any airline. So, no, you do not get Delta dollars, or United dollars, or AA dollars. You get dollars on a cash card.

They do charge a fee.

I will be at MSP on Wednesday and will try to remember to find out the name of the company that operates them.

Are you sure the ones you've seen are UA specific? See my post #22 above.

It's been a while since I've seen one of the cards. I don't recall now the branding on it. I'll try to check Wednesday, although I will be flying out then (not on volunteer duty), so less time to check it out.

Nationwide, there are SIMON (SHOPPING) MALLS, they issue SM gift cards which can be used anywhere they accept VISA or MC (depending which version you got). Visa/MC cards are universally accepted, while airline specific cards are NOT.
[I've gotten these from Casino promos...I don't pay a fee.^]

Just noticed it was $6 at JFK last week...

Not that I've ever used one so I don't have a charge to show, but I noticed it and shook my head.
