FO's first landing (i.e; the First Officer goes bump)

Had the captain come on intercom after a routine landing in ATL and say "How about a round of applause for the First Officer, this was his first landing with passengers!" Many pax laugh & applaud.

As I deplane I said to the FO "Good luck, we're all counting on you". ("Airplane" the movie reference.). He grins, I walk off. Then I stop on the jetway, open my bag, grab something and walk back on board. FA is asking if I forgot something but I just go back to the FO... "I thought this was a perfect reason to use one of these" and hand him a Job Well Done certificate!

FA starts laughing, FO laughs and leans in to the cockpit to tell the captain.

Perhaps the first mainline landing with passengers. I'm sure he has done plenty on regional jets. It's still a good story and good for the captain to give recognition for it.

I was thinking same thing and:

OMG they are letting FO not just carry DMs bag but land jets now?

or

Are the "soft landing" DMs to FO now all of a sudden? #TheShameOfItAll

or

Are they really celebrating when someone flies as an FO for the 1st time now?

I think the GA may have "celebrated" my first trip as an FO ten years ago. It is pretty much unheard of for an FO to clear ATL-LGA but I got it on my first trip.

I thought you meant first officer at first, haha. This thread is confusing!

Haha yeah it probably wasn't the best idea to use FO as the internal code for silver medallion. But it originated back in the day when the pejorative "copilot" was used.

Title fixed. ^

But one of my traveling companions was in fact a FO, so maybe it's still open to interpretation.....

Could always be an ex-fighter jock. Delta hires a fair number of military guys/gals directly, and not all of them flew cargo jets.

It would of been more fun had the captain come on the intercom BEFORE the landing and asked for prayers for the First Officer, this will hopefully be his first landing.

Yes didn't think of that. Although they are definitely in the minority. The regionals have had such bad staffing issues due to losing their pilots to mainline carriers. Several of my friends went to mainline without even being captain at a regional.

The Air Force is having its own staffing issues too.

Senior Air Force officials said Wednesday the Air Force will face a shortage of 700 fighter pilots by the end of 2016. That shortfall is estimated to grow to 1,000 by 2022.

The Air Force is offering huge retention bonuses (now approaching $450K) to keep its pilots but many are still bailing after serving their initial commitment.
