DL is only airline on Fortune's 100 best to work for

Interesting tidbit. Happy employees make for happy customers...
From the press release:

After awarding Delta a highly sought-after spot on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list on Thursday, Fortune spotlighted Delta today for being the only airline to make the list – in years.

The airline industry is typically thought to be a stressful work environment, yet employees at Delta don’t just tolerate their jobs – they love them. Why? Fortune reporter Jeff John Roberts said it’s because of the airline’s “shrewd compensation scheme [and] a strong set of values dating back to the company’s founder.”

“Among the companies that made the cut for Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list, the most surprising may well be Delta, which is on the list this year for the first time; it’s also the first airline to make the cut in a dozen years,” Roberts wrote.

Part of that ‘shrewd compensation scheme’ includes Delta’s profit sharing program, which is highlighted as “the most generous – for an airline or any blue-chip company” bonus program.

Additionally, Fortune highlighted the airline’s profit sharing program in its CEO Daily email: “Last month, the company handed out more than $1 billion in bonuses – which amounted to 10 percent of the company’s pre-tax earnings.”

Delta’s overall pay and benefits were highlighted as well, including the airline’s “generous 401(k) program that matches contributions up to 9 percent.”

On top of that, Roberts explained, is Delta’s culture and values, which is based on “Rules of the Road.” The rules reflect the principles outlined by Delta’s founder C.E. Woolman, preaching empathy, humility and respect.

Delta’s ability to come out on top, even during challenges, was also a proof point for why the airline made the list. Roberts wrote that the system outage in August is typically the sort of thing that causes an airline’s customer satisfaction scores to plummet, but at Delta, the airline’s scores actually went up. Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian credited the unusual outcome directly to the company’s employees and culture.

Roberts said that while Delta doesn’t offer lavish perks like free haircuts or all-you-can-eat kale buffet, it does offer one perk even better – free travel.

This is why I think DL is in a stronger position today than UA or AA. The expectations were set right from the beginning and there was no doubt that it was going to be the Delta way for better or worse.

uh-oh - cue the torches and pitchforks - around here, people seem to believe the only reason Delta employees belong on planes is to provide them non-stop snack basket service and continuously flowing wood fords, and that's it. Just the thought of a Delta employee daring to take their precious Delta One/First Class seat...

UA seems to be getting this, at least IME; but AA - yowza! Dougie and friends took the opposite approach of DL: let's keep the AA name, but adopt the US standard of no-frills service.

Congrats to DL! Certainly my carrier of choice these days...
