MSP-RAP landed at Ellsworth AFB instead of RAP Airport... Oops! Anyone on board?

June 2004: A Northwest Airbus A319 intending to land at Rapid City, S.D., instead landed about 12 miles away at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

I'm assuming the runways are on the same heading - isn't that usually what causes issues like this?

Two recent incidents I remember:

Here is the second flight.

Now the most important question - did they get the 500 MQMs min. for the second flight from the AFB to RAP?

Sort of. RAP is a bit south of the AFB. But if the weather is clear you can't miss the interstate (which is not near RAP) by the AFB.

Passengers were probably sent via shuttle bus with no 500 MQMs credit provided

If it's 7 LESS MQMs, it should go in the - Least substantive complaint - thread!

Pilots confused Hwy 14 for Hwy 44. They both have small rivers across the roadway from the airport, to add to the confusion.
Typical mistake any amateur flyer could make; a little harder to understand with all the navigation aids on an Airbus.
They probably disconnected the autopilot as soon as the runway was in sight.

Could have been a total catastrophe since they were likely talking to GC of the wrong airport all along.

Aw man, I convinced my mom and some friends to fly DL to RAP next month (they're usually UA fliers). Not going to hear the end of this

According to Delta.com, the flight departed MSP 8 minutes early - - but, due to the diversion, it arrived at RAP 2 hours and 41 minutes late!!!

Yeeeeow!!!

Any thoughts on why this took so long to straighten out?!?

Hmmm, landing at an AFB without PPR from the military. Probally not really appreciated and they might had some questions/paperwork first before letting them go again.
