I saw this pop up on A.net a few days ago. As someone there mentioned, this is the only news source reporting this, and frankly, no one's ever heard of them. I just googlenewsed it, and the mirage article is the only one that comes up (also tried: "pilot sleep", and a few other queries. If this were somehow verifiable, I can't help but think the U.S./Euro media would be all over it.

All we know for sure is that there was a loss of comms. Sleeping is just one possibility (perhaps even a probability, but as yet unconfirmed).

There might be something to this story after all, maybe not as big of a deal as stated in the article but in this discussion there is actually a Delta statement: http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/5...er-greece.html

Maybe Greece is looking for money by sending up intercepts on the pretense that there is no communication? I found it interesting that they submitted a bill to Delta for fuel and services. I know the country is bankrupt, but geesh.

Many years ago my brother-in-law, who was a jet mechanic for Continental, told me about a flight coming from the east into LAX. There was no radio contact, and it didn't begin its descent at the appropriate time, and in fact flew at altitude past the airport and out into the Pacific. They were able to finally get in contact by calling on the airline frequency, which apparently rang a bell in the cockpit, and woke up the flight crew. The sleepy pilots turned the plane around. Supposedly they barely had enough fuel left to return to LAX.

With so many ATCs in Europe pilots have to check-in with every one of those regions, chances are likely to miss a frequency.
Apparently emergency frequency being used as partly line by some, so pilots get fed up listening to the small talk and either tune out or turn the volume down.
One crew member taking a quick nap is not uncommon, but sleep is contagious, very likely fellow member will also doze off.

This was covered in one of the Belgian papers this morning. The article is in line with the link in the OP.

Many times when boarding you can hear the loud "SELCALL" warning message or you can hear things like: "terrian, terrain", "Sinkrate", "Jet pipe overheat", etc. as they run through the checklists.

I remember that. I believe it was an A320 flying SAN-MSP. I'm not sure if the real story was ever known. Some think the crew were asleep and the pilots said they were distracted by a crew bidding application on their laptop. Regardless, the FAA pulled their certificates and they no longer work for Delta.

Interesting, I just figured it meant "Cell Call" aka "I'm an airplane, I'm being annoying by letting you know what I'm doing"... because most of the times I heard it as a GA was when they were running ACARS W&B or pestering dispatch trying to avoid ATC metering by leaving a few minutes earlier.
