DL flight passengers evacuated from plane at PHX
I didn't see the existing thread in a few weeks ago.
I heard DL flight passengers is evacuated from the plane due to overheated brakes. http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...port/71860620/ They were supposed to departed at 4:50pm to SLC and they came back to PHX. |
Possible the previous flight into PHX had a used the brakes heavily and with
a short turn around time had not had a sufficient chance to cool off that with the hot ground temperature resulted in the brakes seizing or locking up when used just briefly taxiing to the runway for takeoff. Not a good outcome if the brakes are needed (and they would) to abort a takeoff. Heat and Fire go together. Also consider that the brakes are very very close to the rubber flammable tires not a condition to ignore ! |
Happened to me twice on an Airbus leaving DEN.
We flew at a low altitude to let the brakes cool down. |

With the landing gear down? The higher up you are the cooler it is but it's probably not a good idea to fly at 35,000 feet with your landing gear down. Then again, why would it be a concern once you are airborne? Unless you are flying MSP-RST or some other super short route.
Shortly after take-off and initial radar contact, the landing gear came out again. The plane stayed at a low altitude (between 5-10K iirc) for a couple of minutes. The landing gear was then retracted again, and the ascent continued. |
