Change fee or just don't take flight?
My daughter has R/T in July. She was able to extend her vacation and found a return flight for approx. $147. Query - If she calls DL, she will incur a $200 change fee plus cost of new return. Can she just not show for the return flight, or must she notify DL? If she doesn't notify DL of no show, will she incur any problems on the newly booked return?
She is not trying to beat the system, only save $200.

If she isn't using a SkyMiles number on both reservations, it won't be a problem at all.
I have no clue how SkyMiles rules work. If she wants to use SkyMiles on her flights, then someone else could cover that.
I do know that she could have 2 SkyMiles accounts and use one for each reservation, and combine them later.

She should just not check in or show up for the return flight. As a precaution, don't add the DL Skymiles number to the new flight until she checks in for the new flight.
She should keep an eye on the original flight; if the schedule changes by a substantial amount (say, 2 hours) or the flight is cancelled, she can ask for her money back for that flight.
She should have no problems.

The above answers seem to assume that the new flight is operated by DL too.
Not putting her FF number on the new flight she wants will lead to some inconvenience, such as no PreCheck, not being able to look the (new) itinerary up easily on delta.dumb or the app, etc. but these are minor compared to the money that will be saved. For elites, one would also lose the SkyPriority check in counter line, good phone help, possibly lounge access, preferred and EC/C+ seats, the chance of an upgrade, the chance of an OPUP, etc.

1. OP's daughter should not cancel her current return. If there is a significant change or cancellation, she will be entitled to a full refund to her original form of payment. Otherwise, simply no show. DL counts on those no shows and overbooks.
2. DL's sole prohibition is on "impossible" tickets. That is not the case here, presuming that we're not talking about extending by a couple of hours. And if it were a problem, whether the SM # is attached or not won't make a difference. DL's software matches to name, address, CC, IP address and all kinds of other data. None of that matters here as what OP's daughter proposes to do isn't "impossible".
