Personally, I'd look at hopping on the ATL-LAX flat bed (5:25 departure from ATL) and connect LAX-SFO, which has hourly departures. Buy the flight out with miles (45,000) and the return one way in coach that's not a redeye.
For 90,000 you can do flat bed seats both out and return (both through LAX, return red eye).

Do I think that's excessive, hell yes.
[Sorry read that as ATL-LAX first, not ATL-SFO.... so I've update the #s below.]
For comparison, AA has 4 flights in F on 6/18for 25k miles one way and 1 flight in F on 6/21 (including 1 non-stop) for 25k miles one way. There are even 12.5k Y seats on 6/18.
100k miles for a roundtrip in domestic F?!? No way.

Does it have to be SFO? Maybe cheaper to OAK or SJC? Last time I needed to go to San Francisco DL wanted ~$2400 for first class ORD-SFO RT. I flew ORD-OAK and SJC-MDW for about $800 RT all in paid first. You can get BART out of OAK if you aren't going to rent a car...

I am considering treating a family member by flying first class to SFO from ATL.
The award travel rate is 90-100K for 1st class, yikes! This seems excessive to me, is it? Can I use Delta award miles on a partner for less? If so, how can I book that?
I appreciate any insight.
Thanks!

ATL-SFO is twice as far as EWR-MSP. Paid F is going for $1129 on ATL-SFO vs. $691 on EWR-MSP. Not really surprising they are being stingy with F award redemptions on this route when compared to EWR-MSP (or AA where the only options involve connections).
