What did the FA say when you complained and showed her the bag? This is what crew are there for and if you didn't raise it, it couldn't have been that important.
Why you reclined is none of anybody's business. You reclined because you wanted to. Other pax needs more room, she can buy a second seat in front of her or fly F.

There are two ways to recline the seat - the first would meet the seal of
approval as a civilized method - merely turn around look back at passenger
behind you and state you are about to recline the seat slowly till you reach
its limits.
The other is the 'Slam Bam' dump your seat back right down as fast as
you can pinching fingers computer audio cords spilling drinks and food
askew and perhaps causing the tray table to launch its contents any
which way from normal -or- even make physical contact with the person
behind while they are reaching for something underneath the seat or writing
a note on their tray table - dozens of other scenarios.
Me thinks the be nice method is the best of the two.
Now I will go to a neutral corner and expect to clobbered by comments !

You have every right to recline, absolutely.
However, the nice thing to do is to take a glance back - or even (egads!) talk to the person behind you to give them fair warning. I have had my laptop screen nearly crunched countless times over the years by the person in front who could have given some sort of warning. It's the geometry of open laptop screen and the back of the chair being so tight. When the seat in front is slammed back, it can get hairy.
An annoyance that I have noticed as of late is people kicking/pushing the seat in front of them if it's reclined and it's time to eat. Again, a person has a right to be reclined the entire time, and a reclined seat is not that much of a hindrance to eating. It has never entered my mind to expect the person in front of me to put his or her seat up, but some people have come to the conclusion that they cannot function hand to mouth if the seat in front of them is reclined.

So, the mods close another thread because it was devolving into a xenophobic stereotyping of an entire country's population.
And some of you decide to do an end-around of that closure by taking this thread off topic in the same, sorry direction.
MODS?!?!

Some people will come on here to complain about any mildly bad experience. I think we've all experienced rude passengers. To be honest, if an annoying pax stopped after 10 minutes like this one did, I'd be positively gleeful. and FYI, someone closing their seat-back tray with a little more force than necessary is not grounds for a flight diversion...
Obviously you only read every third word or so. She didn't just throw a verbal fit, she hit him with a bag, and not once, twice, but three times pushed the tray in with force. The second she or her bag touched him it became assault if he wanted to press charges.
Cussing, verbally complaining, etc I can handle, the second I was touched the FA would be called over and I'd be requesting police to escort her off the plane.

I'd imagine you wouldn't need to say anything to the FA. Just pushing the button and having the light come on would be enough to make most grown persons re-evaluate their behavior. If you didn't want to cause a scene, just tell the FA that the lady behind you seems to be having trouble with her tray and leave it at that.

I got into an argument with the person behind me on my last TATL. Apparently when I reclined it ruined his angle to see the PTV in the seatback (I thought these things could adjust, but this guy was pretty tall). I agreed not to recline until after he finished his movie. Next day after the flight I had severe back pain from sleeping upright for several hours. I agree with OP, don't let anyone bully you into putting your seat up.

I am closing this one down for obvious reasons.
