DL Orders 15 Additional A321s

http://news.delta.com/2014-06-02-Del...-A321-Aircraft

Delta Air Lines has reached an agreement with Airbus to purchase 15 A321 aircraft for delivery beginning in 2018.
..
With today's announcement, Delta now has 45 A321s on order
Interesting.. Why add more and not preemptively order 45? What changed?

Left to speculate, my guess is that this is an opportunistic order to take some of the last current engine A319/320/321s coming off the line. Buy 'em cheap - keep them many years - so long as fuel prices don't spike and competitors are flying aircraft 15-20% more fuel efficient.

Could be that Airbus is cutting deals now to clear out the ceo models before the neo production ramps up.

i wouldn't be surprised if they changed these to NEOs and delayed delivery.

If they're going to go with the A321 instead of more 739s, I hope they're at least going to be more comfortable than the configs on the 739...

This is the config:
The new planes will be configured with 20 first-class seats, 23 premium-economy seats, and 149 seats in coach. Each will have in-flight Internet, in-flight entertainment with live satellite television and on-demand content, and a power outlet at each seat.

NEOs aren't proven technology right now. DL will only buy proven planes.

It's hardly possible to be less comfortable than the 739s IMO.

I would expect similar configuration except they will have wider seats because of the Airbus' wider cabin. Also, the press release mentions 110v power in every seat, does the 737-900 have that?

Airbus cut then a hell of a deal to take the last one's off the line of the current generation. Typical DL style to focus on the capital costs. Might well see a similar deal with the 777-300ER to replace the 747. Boeing is running out of orders past 2016 with the updated version on the horizon.
