I was finally getting used to MD88s for OKC-ATL-OKC but I had to fly the lame 717 this week and will repeat this in coming weeks.

Huh? The MD-88 and 717 are basically the same airframe. The 717 has quieter, more efficient engines, however, and almost brand-new interiors (including power at every seat). They also don't smell like decades of stale coffee. The only knock is that the 717 has fewer FC seats, but it also has correspondingly fewer economy seats.

717 >>> MD88

How, from the passenger's perspective, would a 717 be appreciably more or less lame than an MD88?

Last week I was on a 717 ATL - TYS. Soon after takeoff, the door to the cockpit flew open. The FA tried her best to close the door, but for a good 45 seconds the door was open while we were ascending. Definitely a bizarre experience.

I agree with all that you said there; however the MD-88 fleet has been receiving mood lighting updates which is quite nice. I am just surprised at the fact that the MD-88 still has old coach seats. Not that it will matter since retirements start next year. CS100 will replace them.

Any chance we will snatch up more 717s? I wonder if HA will hold onto theirs until they retire them all. The other airline I wonder about is Qantas.

There's 19 717s Volotea is planning on dumping in favour of A319s. I'd say DL is probably looking very seriously at taking them up.

From what I have read, HA is very happy with their 717s and I would think they would hold onto them as long as possible. There is no great replacement for their inter-island flying.

Is it just me or are the 717s already looking really beat up? I was on one on Tuesday and I'd say about half of the window frames were coming off. I pushed mine back in when I sat down but after the first little bump it popped right back out. And the lights are definitely installed incorrectly, as well. They flickered like crazy, as if you're attempting to dim a florescent light bulb that can't be dimmed. Not to mention they randomly used different color temperature bulbs in the lights (different shades of white and yellow, why!?). I'm still upset that they didn't install PTVs in these planes either. They're regularly used on 3+ hour flights, I think that warrants TVs.

Wow. I haven't flown a DL717 lately but I'd personally have a hard time choosing an MD88 over one. More modern is more modern no matter how you slice it in my eyes. I happen to be a big Boeing fan as well though.

To me, these seem like maintenance issues and that isn't on the Aircraft it's on the airline.

And I'm not looking to pick on Delta. My mom is a retired Redcoat. I've flown lots of Delta my entire life.

Mrs. ND76 and I will be aboard a 717 DTW-DCA in about 4 hours. My only complaint about this aircraft is that the F seating is very tight; when the seat in front of you is fully reclined, you have exactly 9 inches of headroom (pitch).

You're not using seat pitch in the industry-standard sense. Pitch is the distance from one seat to the same point on a forward (or rearward) seat. It is not a measurement of recline, face space, nor knee room.

At 37" pitch in F, the 717s got an inch greater pitch than the NW config on the A320s, and two inches more than the A319s. From a 2008 (pre-merger) Internet Archive Wayback Machine cache of nwa.com:

https://web.archive.org/web/20081004...irbus_A320.php

https://web.archive.org/web/20081006...irbus_A319.php

If your complaint is that Delta has enabled too great a recline angle, that's a different issue. Somebody seated in front of you is enjoying that reclining ability.

Delta is going to start using the 717 SLC to SNA and back instead of a A319 down and a CRJ900 back. I kind of liked the leg room in row 4 on the 900.

Not a complaint, but an observation. I was on a 717 in seat 3A DCA-JFK fairly recently, the pax in 2A fully reclined, and my forehead was exactly two Iphone lengths from the back of his seat, or 9 inches.

Therefore, I like the bulkhead row in F on the 717. Being forewarned is being forearmed.
