I am scheduled to fly MNL-NRT (first time on the upper deck) this week, but it looks like I will have to give it up due to changes to my return date.
If I plan to take this route again next year, NRT-MNL-NRT do you think the 747 will still be operating daily?
Also, re the DTW-NRT route, will be it operating 4x weekly next summer, since the change would have just been made on 10/5/2015?
I looked at the Wiki, and if I understood, most of the 747's are retiring this year?? I thought I read somewhere that it would be in 2017??

I just got off AMS-DTW. My only complaint is that this is such a short flight!
The Captain let me take a photo in his seat and an FA decided to make the flight memorable for me considering I have only one more 744 secured booked.
My favorite seat on my favorite aircraft. How sad to see this come to an end.

Or like with me... a life-long wait to finally fly on the 747 and even had upper deck business class seats... Delta screwed me and did an equipment change the MORNING OF THE FLIGHT. Horrible.

I'm in a similar situation with my first 747 flight coming up and have the same fear of a last minute equip. swap. Out of curiosity - what route did this happen to you on?

747 ops have been borderline disaster lately. Last weekend, (Thurs/Fri), 3 were out of service at one point. DTW-AMS, AMS-DTW, AMS-DTW, DTW-CDG, PVG-DTW, DTW-ICN were all either cancelled or had equipment subbed.

Not the kind of news that encourages me to upfare a few $1000 just to ride the 744 UD one more time.
I did make AMS-DTW on Monday and have PVG-DTW booked for October but the next trip with possible 747s costs much more than alternate routing.

ATL-AMS, Flight 72. It happened because of the two 747s need repairs in a week. One was the one in Asia with the Hail Storm and the other was the one in SNN that had the false alarm in the baggage hold. Such a sad thing to have that dream dashed just hours before and Delta be so "whatever, tough sh-t" about it.

With 15% of the fleet out of service, what do you expect DL to do? DL is in the business of transporting people from A to B, not in the business of providing unique aviation hobbyist excursions. If DL substituted an aircraft and was able to execute the schedule, DL did the right thing for the most people.

Be that as it may, for those who consider the 744 J product their favorite DL hard product, one's sense of disappointment is understandable in such circumstances. This reaction ultimately reflects favorably on what DL was able to achieve with a product they now chose to discard.
