Not at all true: they can set fares to increase over time, so anybody who buys at the last minute pays the high fare, whether or not any cheap fares were purchased. They aren't required to sell X number of cheap seats first.Originally Posted by aubreyfromwheaton

However, they have an estimate of how many expensive seats they'll sell last-minute, so they want to sell the rest of the plane as cheap seats in advance rather than letting them fly empty.

No that's wrong. If the plane is wide open and the airlines aren't colluding there's no way they will maximize revenue by keeping the fare as High as they could if the plane were fuller
They can try to charge but if there are empty planes some airline will cave for an L fare equivalent.

Was there a way to buy 3000 MQMs? 2500 is too little and 5000 is too much - SHORT ANSWER NO
Transaction Terms:
Minimum/Maximum MQMs per transaction, per recipient: 2,500 / 10,000

The good news is that — when compared to last year — the opportunity to purchase Medallion Qualification Miles has been extended by approximately a month. Last year, the period of time was at the end of November through December 15, 2011; whereas this year the period of time for this promotion is effective between November 15, 2012 and December 31, 2012 — triple the amount of time for you to purchase Medallion Qualification Miles.
The bad news is that the cost of each transaction has increased across the board by $100.00 as compared to last year.

Awful pricing especially considering last year. I certainly haven't seen any positive additions to the medallion perks, maybe they get their market research data from Neil Newhouse

Then last year DL decided to keep the money for themselves.
It was so successful last year they felt the need to raise the price even more!
