How Much Time Does it Take to Get Through Security In Atlanta?

The family and I are returning home from vacation.

I've never actually had to go through security here. So, don't know what to expect. Want to make it as smooth and stress free as possible for the wife and kiddos.

Here are the details

11:08 flight to SAN. No checked luggage. I'm planning to allot 2 hours.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

I think that allowing 2 hours would allow you enough time to go through security, ride the trains for a half hour, eat lunch and still have time to make your flight . Seriously, Atlanta security is much improved and should take no more than 20 minutes even at the busiest times.

Completely agree with the previous posters. Even at morning "rush hour" it's typically a breeze. Now I'm going through the "elite" line on the South side where the whole process takes no more than 10 minutes. But even looking over at the non-elite line, it's moving smoothly too.

With a flight at 11:00--after the morning rush--it should't take much time at all. I agree 20-25 minutes max.

Try to avoid the main checkpoint. It's always slow.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the ATL map and route myself accordingly.

I have to respectfully disagree with the opinion that the elite/priority line at the South terminal is faster. At certain times of day, yes, but on Monday morning, the main checkpoint is generally faster due to more TSA agents checking ID and more lanes to choose from. I use the priority line during the off business travel times.

However, as with all things, YMMV.

This Monday I waited longer in the priority line than the regular Southe terminal line right next to us. But, still it was less than 20 minutes.

I moved from ATL last April, and I never saw much of a difference between using the Main security checkpoint and the elite line. The lines can be long, but they are always moving. Generally TSA is good about having enough lanes open to support the number of pax in line. Even with a line out to the atrium, I think 20-30 minutes is the longest wait I have had. I maybe went thru security at ATL twice on a non-Monday morning though, so my experience is largely based on the Monday morning rush.

It took right around 25 minutes.

Would have gotten through sooner but the person in front of us at the document check stand had trouble. It was a minor and an adult who was escorting the child to the gate. The escort didn't have the right pass. It took 2 TSA agents and a supervisor to finally sort it out after about 6 or 7 minutes.

In the air now and can't wait to feel some of that non-humid so-cal air. I can't believe I survived my childhood in all that deep South humidity

Typically pretty good unless you are returning from a International trip and making a connection. No priority lanes, no elite anything, no 'if your connection is tight because your flight was delayed' line. It is pretty pathetic. Not Delta's fault.

ATL based, i leave my house 2 hours prior to flight and it has never been tight (takes me 45 - 50 minutes to commute and park). I usually use the north security checkpoint which even on the busiest of monday mornings is no more than 20 minutes.

Traveling with the family recently, you are not allowed to bring strollers through the north or south security lines - you must use the main - although, there is a special needs lane that you can use.

have a great trip.

With the introduction of the SkyPriority lines in the South terminal, it is now usually faster to go through this line for security. The most notable exception is Monday morning, but I try to avoid flying out on Monday morning.
