The nice thing about AirBnB for Americans is that we can pay by CC before we go. Less cash to have to bring. And one has to do some math to see if the higher price and fees are worse than the 10% penalty on turning US$ into CUC.

The bigger problem on AirBnB is that the selection is poor. Google around and find sites like http://www.casaparticularcuba.org/ that offer casas. Trip Advisor also has tons of reviews of individuals casas that you can then reach out to directly.
