pre cruise tours for Buenos Aires

Dear fellow ft-ers, for a cruise in Feb 2017 we'd like to spend a few days before our cruise in Buenos Aires. Unfortunately our cruise line only offers a day trip to Iguazu at a price of 1.000 $ p.P. as pre cruise tour (interesting but this seems to be much too expensive).

Any tips for worthwile day-trips or must sees in the EZE area?

This past December , we had a few days in Buenos Aires & walked about on our own , to ease the jet lag too . Stayed at the PH which was very centrally located to get to some sites .
We also made a trip to Iguazu Falls on our own . We are glad we did 2 nights at the Belmond & it was much cheaper than going on the cruise tour .
When we embarked , we also had a night on board before sailing & joined one of the cruise tours which included exploring the delta area .
Hope this helps .

I took the two free walking tours with this company, and had a fantastic time. Energetic young guides take you around the historic part of town in the morning, and the more architecturally interesting parts including the Recoleta in the afternoon tour. Free, just tip what you feel they're worth to you. You get to know the city and can go back to see what interests you. The guides can point you to great local restaurants, etc.

Check out the reviews on tripadvisor for more details.

For a nice day trip, take a boat over to Colonia, Uruguay for the day. A pleasant little historic town, nice to walk around and have lunch and some wine.

Another little trip you could take is to Tigre, a 45 minute train ride from Retiro station. It's an interesting little place to stroll around.

If you're in BsAs on Sunday, don't miss the Feria de San Telmo, stretching from near Casa Rosada (Plaza de Mayo) along Defensa Street to Plaza Dorrego.

Have fun, BsAs is a great city.

P.S. You'll probably get more ideas from the BsAs locals of you post this in the Argentina forum, where there are many regular posters.

See a tango performance - or two. Amazing experience.

Take tea in the afternoon. I vividly remember classic blue-haired little old ladies with a full tea service on the table. Pretty flowered dishes. I could have sworn I was in London, but they were chatting in Spanish.

Find one of those beef restaurants where the cover of the menu is a picture of a beef cow. First page inside shows where the various cuts come from. Then pictures of actual cuts of meat, sides hanging over the plate. Finally there are pictures of the cooked product. They take meat VERY seriously.

Be very careful with your money. I'm a math major, and a couple creative folks still managed to very smoothly short-change me at the railroad station.

There is a fairly new greeter service , Buenos Aires Greeters , which also provides free walks by volunteers : http://cicerones.org.ar/?lang=en .
It is linked to and is similar to Big Apple Greeter , NYC .
Had an energetic & knowledgeable guy finishing his gap year telling us about the city ' s history , various areas besides regaling us with other insider information part of it while walking . Pleasantly surprised .
Forgot to add .
Timing is flexible and they will match your preferences ( architecture , culture , food , etc ) with a greeter . It is customized for you or your very small group .
