I'm not convinced that using a TA would be any great advantage. You need to be able to deal directly with the cruise company over the fine details. A TA just slows things up. Also, if you deal directly with the company you get all sorts of discounts/special offers on other trips. But then, I never use a TA on any kind of trip. I just don't see the point of them, frankly, especially in the age of the internet.

Just decide what sort of ship you really want - big or medium-size, with lots of facilities and entertainment, though seriously limited in where it can go; or small with the sense of adventure and exploration. Then the right company becomes self-evident . . .

For container ship cruising, how is the motion in the ocean compared to a cruise ship?

Ours was only a 30K-something DWT boat, so quite a lot smaller than most cruise ships. Of course we sat somewhat lower in the water too, and didn't have stabilizers.

There were a few days when it was rock 'n roll time, but nothing terrible and neither my wife nor I got sick. We crossed the North Atlantic in early April on the QM2 some time back, probably about the same sensations, albeit six days is not the same as three weeks.

CLICK HERE for a 17 night Shanghai, China - Vancouver, BC cruise. It is tomorrow, so probably won't work for you, but the same thing will happen about this time next year.

I had worried that cruise ships were just for party animals and very old people, but I've found there are enough options on a big ship that I can keep myself quietly and peacefully happy. A library, movies, educational classes and presentations, ship tours ... just watching water/waves/whatever off the upper decks.

CMA-CGM, the French shipping company, has a couple of lines. OIn that does Los Angeles andf Oakland, and the other Price Rupert and Vancouver to Korea/Japan/PRC inc. Hong Kong. There is one 120 day circuit that goes to Port keland in Malaysia and then non-stop to/from U.S. east coast!

As for regular cruise lines, they usually are in the spring eastbound as the ships are moved for the Alaska cruise season and Sept. or so westbound to shift back to Asia (or Australia).

Rates are EUR 110 pppd.

God, those freight cruises look enticing. If only I could deal with being disconnected, and had someone to look after my house & dog for that long. If only I could stand to be away from my dog for that long!

I've thought about a cargo cruise......once I can convince someone to go with me

I'm planning a Tokyo to LA cruise in 2017 on Crystal - The Symphony is about 800 people but over 50,000 GT, so it's luxurious and not very crowded (and not too small to be bopping around in the Pacific). Last fall I took the same cruise ship on a San Diego to Auckland trip, and it was wonderful. There was a family on that cruise who were doing a 'round-the-world adventure as well (their very well-behaved kids were out of school for a year).

Crystal usually has the Symphony crossing the Pacific in one direction or the other, but sometimes it's a port-heavier cruise and sometimes it's a port-light cruise.

Arctic

One of the cruise lines (SilverSea?) opened service in the Arctic from the US/Canada east through to Alaska this year. It sold out. The travel agent that I work with--Cruise Specialists-- had early access. They also do trans Pacific and longer /world cruises.

Cruise Specialists are highly recommended--Kelli Surdell (email: [email protected] )

Did Vancouver to Tokyo last Oct in Celebrity Millenium.
Have cruised a lot, Celebrity plat and all that. The standards at Celebrity have gone down a few notches The ports othe way were nothing to speak of...Russia is just a stop for cheap diesel.

TPAC happen OCT NOV and return in April. Check a couple of sites , but get the cruisenline's info first on dates and prices.

Crystal has a month-long cruise through the Northwest Passage from Anchorage to New York in 2016. It sold out in less than a month, with the lowest priced ticket at about $23,000 per person (double occupancy). I thought it looked fabulous, but not at that price, LOL. Even for a luxury, "all inclusive" cruise.

I am considering a 'round the Horn cruise through the Drake Passage, with a pass by Antarctica.

Interesting information! I have experienced more hot weather than I care for in this life, and am often frustrated that most cruises focus on hot-weather touring. I prefer 'shoulder seasons' but a NW passage (at any time) would probably be too boring for me. Not to mention expensive, apparently!
