Are you getting transferred to a "specialist"? Or are you just talking to whoever answer the phone?

Barclays uses different terminology than Citi. Barclay doesn't seem to use the term "retention". What CIti would call a "transferring you to the retention department", Barclay calls "transferring you to a specialist".

Perhaps you're phrasing things wrong. You have to first say you're thinking of cancelling because the annual fee is hard to justify because of the overlap with the Citi AA card. Just saying it's because you have a Citi AA card doesn't explain that your reason for cancelling is tied to the annual fee, and therefore isn't the right phrasing to trigger the lookup of an offer (or the transfer to a "specialist" who can see offers that the front-line agent apparently doesn't see).

Barclays agents are trained to do things based on certain wording. We who pay attention to what other people posted and try to use similar wording are successful. You seem to have decided to make up your wording and seem to be unsuccessful. Could your wording be related to your lack of success???

I'm curious how careful I need to be about calling them and speaking with a retention specialist.

Side question - is Barclays as easy as AmEx about moving around credit lines between cards? My first one has about $20K less credit than the one I want to get rid of, and I hate giving up lines of credit...

Update from my earlier post.

Called the standard # yesterday, and moved all but $1,000 of my credit line onto my primary Aviator account, since it has the 10K anniversary miles each year attached. Simple and fast phone call.

Called the standard # today, mentioned cancellation and was immediately kicked over to the retentions department. Julie was quite friendly, and as soon as I mentioned duplicate benefits on 'my Citi AA card' she threw out the annual fee waiver offer. Immediately accepted!

I then asked about any spend incentives (per other's comments above in this thread), but she said she didn't have anything to offer until March 1st, when a 50% spend bonus would be run via the Marketing dept (max 10K miles bonus).

I then asked the same questions on my primary Aviator, and it also had an annual fee waiver offer, but no spend bonuses other than the aforementioned March offer.

I'll take the $178, and just put spend on other (better) cards.

Thanks FlyerTalk!

* "I have a Citi AA card and don't need Barclaycard."
* "Trying to save money. Annual fee is too much."

Nothing works! I spent roughly $16k on the card last year.

Both my mom and dad got their annual fee waived + 5k miles and they spent like $3k - $9k on their cards. My significant other got the same offer! He spent $31k on his card.

So I'm right in the middle of everyone for spending, but I can't get any offers. I even flat out just asked on my last call "I'm thinking of canceling because I have the Citi AA card. If I weren't booking an AA trip this May for 115k miles, I would seriously cancel the Red Aviator card. But because of that annual 10% bonus miles, I'll get back 10k miles when I book my trip. So I don't want to cancel. I don't have any other AA cards at this moment.

Oh well, I give up at this time. I figured I'd at least try. It's all part of the game.
If they really don't want your business, but you want to have an AA card for the 10% rebate, there's an easy solution to your problem: close the Barclays card, open a Citi card, get your rebate, and get 50k extra miles on top of it all.

Ok, maybe overly simplistic. If you're actually talking to a specialist (not a front line CSR) as mentioned above, then my only other question would be whether or not your AF posted yet. It not, then wait until it posts, and try again. People seem to have better luck after it has posted.

No hard pull to shift credit around? Usually you can only shift around with Barclays w/o a hard pull when you have just opened or closed a card.

Well.. they need to. Once a cardholder is gone, they're gone since they can't sign new people up. Curious what I get on my 2nd Aviator when its fee comes up in the next few weeks.

The rep did not make any mention of any kind of pull (soft or hard). All I did was shift around my existing lines, keeping the same overall total. Not sure why that would ever need a pull (?).

Aviator Red 5k retention offers slow to post

I have two Aviator Red cards on which I received retention offers of 5,000 bonus points for $1k spent. I completed one offer before the card's 12/19 statement and the other card's offer before its 1/11 statement. As of today neither 5k bonus has posted. The T&Cs have the standard "allow 6-8 weeks" language, but are other people with similar retention offers seeing their points take this long to post?

You'd think that, but several banks will do a hard pull for shifting credit, even if you're lowering or just moving existing credit around. Chase and Amex do not, but I've heard about Citi and Barclays doing a hard pull if you're not opening/closing a card.

Barclays takes a while to post points from these offers. The 15k for $500/month always takes 4-8 weeks after the statement ends at the end of the offer period so I expect this to be the same.

I called yesterday and the rep waived the annual fee after explaining all the benefits the card comes with. He also indicated that they are planning to roll out exclusive discounted flights for Aviator cardholders in the next few months! And lastly he checked I have no other offers but should check back once a while to see Last year they offered me 5K points for $500 spend per month for three months plus they were running the 50% more miles around the same time frame so I pocketed quite a lot of miles!

Is it better to call after the statement with annual fee has closed?

Fee has posted on one (of two) of my mum's Aviator Red cards. Two reps said can't waive, another one said 50% off fees on both cards. It wasn't this tough with my cards. Asked to transfer credit limit and close, then got transferred to another rep in credit dept. This took way too long so going to call another day.

Aviator: Called and was transferred to a specialist. They gave me the option to downgrade to the no fee Arrival or have my annual fee waived. I took the waiver but knowing that I could downgrade to the Arrival was nice.

Okay, I just called back AGAIN, now that my statement has closed. It's been about 35 days since I paid the annual fee. Account has $0 balance.

I explained exactly what I saw about, and the agent said "I'm so sorry, about that. Let me just check your account here for offers..." and then she faded off, making it seem like she shouldn't have said this, and then came back VERY FAST and said "by closing your account today, you will lose all Red Aviator benefits...." blah blah blah. The usual. I just hung up.

So I'm guessing like 99% of accounts are available for this annual fee waiver, but for some reason I'm part of the 1% that isn't. It's so weird.... It has to be my account. This was my 6th time trying.

Same issue here - I PM'd them, the answer was a stock answer mentioning the 6-8 weeks, but at least they ack'd the offer in writing.

It's not uncommon for the banks to play word games here. They won't "waive the annual fee," but they will then turn around & offer you a "courtesy credit" (or some other euphemism) that is functionally a waiver of part or all of the AF.

Better to ask more generally what they can do for you/what offers they can make instead of saying you want a "fee waiver," IMO.
