50,000 after $3,000 spend:
https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/travel-and-miles/

Capital One usually does a hard pull with all three credit bureaus.
If you have a security freeze on your report, they generally will not allow you to submit a code for this report to be viewable.

If you've held this card before, it looks like you can get this bonus again. Data points: 1, 2. YMMV

Reading the Wiki, am I right in deducing that you essentially only need one travel charge and you can redeem against that as often as you like. I haven't seen anyone report that this aspect has been closed....seems too good to be true...

Yes, you can redeem points towards a travel charge repeatedly for 90 days from the purchase date. I've redeemed points towards the same $5 award ticket fee many times.

There has been one recent change. You can use points to partially offset a travel purchase. You need a minimum of 2500 points in order to do so.

Capital One Venture Rewards card

Considering getting this cards. Currently run all my expenses that accept AMEX through my Centurion card. Use Chase United Visa for everywhere else. I am 1k on United so seems to make sense but wanted to see what thoughts were from those who have this card.

Not sure what they mean by income is insufficient, I didnt request a specific amount of credit. Never been flat out denied before so I'm not exactly sure what to do.
I received the same idiot letter more than once, and their phone numbers all seem to be answered in india. One phone rep seemed to imply that the only method of reaching anyone in charge would be by letter mail.

I got this card about a year ago, so the annual fee should be due soon. Does anyone have info or recommendations on:

  • When the annual fee actually posts (beginning of month, anniversary date, statement date, or something else?)
  • When is the latest after the fee posts to cancel the card and get the fee back?
  • Retention bonuses?
  • Ways to use points considering I don't have any actual travel purchases coming up in the next month?

I'm in the same boat - I've had the card for about a year and the annual fee is coming up soon. I just got off the phone with Cap1 where I asked them if they could do anything to help offset the fee and I mentioned that if they couldn't then I would not be able to keep the account open. The rep I spoke to said that they're currently going through a system upgrade to migrate everyone to chip + signature cards and that they are unable to provide any offers due to that upgrade. He said that if I call back when the upgrade is complete in late January they may be able to offset the fee at that time, but that's after my fee posts so he couldn't promise anything. I asked him if I could downgrade to the no-fee VentureOne card and he said they also cannot process any product changes during their system upgrade, so it would not be possible to downgrade to a different card.

Those answers seemed a little suspicious to me so I'll probably try giving them another call tomorrow to see if I can find a more helpful rep. Also the rep I spoke to said my annual fee will post on January 13. I applied for the card on January 14, so it looks like the fee posts one day before the anniversary of your application date.

Just wanted to let everyone know...annual fee on venture posted about a week ago. Called them today. Very firmly told them to cancel the card because Citi offers double cash on a "non Amex" with $0 annual fee. Also told them don't need the forex fee benefit because I get that through another card that has chip/pin. They put me on hold, came back, and waived the annual fee immediately. Said can't look up any more offers due to the upgrade but am happy with the fee waived.

One more year keeping this card, will end up having the same convo next year.

I think my annual fee will hit in the next two weeks. I'm debating whether I should try to get the annual fee waved, or just cancel and reapply after a couple months to get the bonus again. I currently have two other 2% cards (Citi DCB, Barclays Arrival+) so I'm not losing anything. One pro over the Arrival+ is the ability to pay off the balance with a miles earning debit card. The Citi DCB can do that too, but the downside of that card is that it posts as a CA with AGC purchases. I'm leaning towards canceling but really hate that another application will pull from all 3 credit bureaus again.

I actually was able to do reconsideration by letter mail, but the bad news is that they made another hard inquiry 32 days later and I got another denial similar to the initial one. I did submit my request for reconsideration much sooner than 32 days after initial application. It seems everything is done by the computer and if you were denied once, it is likely the computer will deny you again. I then opened a BBB case to have the 2nd hard inquiry removed from all 3 bureaus, the Corporate Resolution lady relented but was unable to get whatever department in charge to agree. So in the end, I just gave up and wrote it off as a loss and learning experience.

In short, don't attempt reconsideration with Capital One and, better yet, don't apply in the first place if you aren't 100% sure they will approve you.

Ouch, unfortunately I did send them a recon request a couple of weeks ago. In my letter I included in bold text "I do not authorize" another credit inquiry. So far I've heard nothing back. I wonder if they would disregard and make another hard pull anyways. If they do, there's got to be a way to punish them. Who regulates that part of their biz?

For what it is worth, I got exactly the same rejection about 3 weeks ago when I applied. Credit score >780, have 10+ cards open with no balances, but have only applied for 2 cards in the last 6 months. I just laughed it off and moved on. Doesn't sound like there is much hope here.

Just curious, why do you have 10+ cards? That is what is scaring them, regardless if you are using them now, you could. They are also trying to avoid bringing on people who are clear card hoppers for rewards.
With a 780+ score your income must be low by their standards. I would guess well south of $200k annually

To follow up on my previous post about retention offers - I called them back and spoke to another rep who never mentioned the "system upgrade" that supposedly blocked them from doing anything for me a few days ago. The rep said they have a standard rule that they will not waive the annual fee for cardholders who spend less than $10k per year on the card, and since I had spent less than that they could not waive the fee. I asked to downgrade to the no-fee VentureOne card and the rep told me that should be possible but would need to be processed by another department, so they submitted a request for that and said I should hear back within a few days.

The above score is probably too high for their standards. They're looking for the distressed borrower with high credit utilization, who generate most of the dough in cc biz.
